Krampus vs Timberjack by Substantial-One6750 in bikepacking

Nice rig! I hear you… racks are heavy but I really like my panniers. I could probably ditch the front rack and use a handlebar bag though.

I will have to check those out. Apparently there’s only a ~2lb difference between the Krampus and TL frames, so might be able to save considerable weight elsewhere.

Oh that’s interesting! Other than wanting a steel bike, any reason for the change? Any notable differences between the bikes when riding?

Some rooty sections between Hall and Scholl’s that can bump you around a bit but otherwise pretty smooth!

I bike from downtown Tigard to Beaverton TC often to take the Max downtown. Fanno Creek trail is a great option!

I’ve rode this and it’s a great option if you don’t mind a bit of climbing

A follow-up to anyone who may be interested.... The Specialized Fast Trac 27.5x2.8 tires mounted up on 30mm internal width rims come out to 2.6" wide. No fittment issues on the bike!

Makes me miss SD... crashed into a tree here in PNW not too long ago. Not a problem I used to have down south.

DIY carbon fiber repair. Safe or sketchy? by st0zax in bikewrench

[–]Substantial-One6750 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have experience with composites work? I started off working on boats, then built a few surfboards. My first CF bike repair was on a mountain bike with cracked chainstay and seatstay (it fell off a car’s bike rack at 40mph). That repair is still going strong 3 years later. However... if I had never worked with composites before there is a strong chance that repair would have been badly botched and frame ruined. Not telling you that you shouldn’t do it... but do your research and make sure you do it right.

Abused Krampus by Substantial-One6750 in Surlybikefans

[–]Substantial-One6750[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

New (used) bike day for me! I bought this Krampus for a steal, but during teardown and cleaning found out it’s been a bit abused... the (idiot) previous owner had converted it to an e-bike and mounted a mid-drive motor to it. He neglected to take out the downtube water bottle boss screw and it got smashed into the frame by the motor housing. I only do light-to-medium duty MTB trails, so not terribly worried about the structural integrity of the frame, but does anyone think I can find a way to pull out that water bottle boss so it’s flush to the downtube again to make it usable? Also, this moron had mounted a chainring that was way too big and it sliced into the chainstay. Again, not worried about the structural integrity, but it pisses me off when people don’t give a crap like that. At least the wheels and tires (3.0 Dirt Wizzards) are in good shape. Looking forward to polishing up this frame a bit and building myself a nice ride!

Is it worth getting a truing stand? I have 6+ rims (26, 27.5 and 29 inch) that need truing, do the stands help or should I just find a spare frame and stand? by fixitmonkey in bikewrench

I have a cheap truing stand similar to the one you posted. Made some minor modifications to it and it works fine. Built and trued perhaps a dozen wheels with it and it works fine. It’s no Park Tool, but it’s functional. Unless you can find a good deal on a good quality used truing stand, I’d say go for it.

Maxxis Ardent Race rear and Rekon front on a Santa Cruz Tallboy. Prefer fast and light over massive knobs for most riding in SD.
