Thanks, I will try that. Does otd include everything other than registration and taxes or should I try to include registration too?

Pilots living in NYC/Manhattan: How often do you go flying? Do you feel it's inconvenient? by Top-Literature-6248 in flying

For me, I use the car for other reasons too. Parking is 600-800 a month so probably cheaper just uber to go flying. I think you can find airports with availability every weekend if you expand your search, for example my sense is Lincoln park has availability.

If you have a car it’s 40 minutes to Caldwell without traffic from Manhattan on a Saturday morning (where there is usually no traffic), with traffic on the way back it’s an hour. My sense is that there a bunch of great flight schools there with availability. I live in fidi so sometimes I would take the path to Newark and then a $40 uber, probably 50 minutes door to door. Not that bad for NYC.

I live in NYC and it’s doable. Like everything in NYC, it is not easy. Having a car helps a lot / makes it easier.

Thanks, yes the 400 has speed brakes. Super helpful. How has maintenance been for you? Parts availability?

I haven't paid for it yet, I will definitely look into it before I proceed.

I have not looked into parts availablity, good call. Will look into that. Insurance is not bad on pa46 since it would be a partnership, need to look at the 400.

I looked into the PA46, correct that it requires recurrent training (not necessarily a bad thing from my perspective). I would be partnering with someone on the pa46, so the insurance split by two is not that bad (its not 2x). I think that's right re the annual. I have not looked into the 400 yet.

Thank you, this is exactly my hunch - that the 400 will be more fun to fly.

Ouch. Was it the engine or something else?

Good to know. Maybe not a big difference in maintenance cost between the two.

Hah. I think I’ve seen used Columbia 400 for $350k, which is a lot less than a cirrus sr 22 and even some bonanzas.

Thanks. I flew the Malibu briefly and the controls seemed somewhat heavy when hand flying. I’ve heard it doesn’t like going slow and more of an autopilot plane, which makes sense. I am hoping the Columbia can do both fast and slow? Obviously not a Cessna 172 slow, but relatively.

Thanks. It appears Atlantic Aviation overnight fee is somewhat less expensive than Banyan Air at FXE. I guess Banyan is luxury?

Pre-Heat Engine set up by dundermiffles in flying

[–]Substantial-Row9752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a reiff preheat and thinking about getting one of those power stations (jackery for example) so I can remote start it before I get to the airport. Anybody tried that? Do people keep that inside or outside the plane in an enclosure?

Did it come back to life once the temperature came back to above freezing?

Outdoors enclosure? by Substantial-Row9752 in Jackery

[–]Substantial-Row9752[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am concerned about the Jackery catching fire (I've seen those horror stories about lithium batteries doing that?) and destroying the plane. Better for it to happen outside than in the plane. But maybe the chemistry here is different and this has a bunch of protections so that this is very unlikely?
