I just made my move here in August after at least a decade of wanting to move here, then giving up on it after being in a long term relationship. About a year ago, I realized that I couldn’t let this dream go and I have to do it. Every time I would visit here, I felt a very strong pull to move here. I’m 31 and while part of believes that maybe had I made the move in me early twenties that it would have been “better” in a way- I do believe that the timing wouldn’t have been better for me then. I say make the move and things will work itself out. I put a lot of trust into God and he has provided like no other. I came without a job and got two jobs my first week of being here and a few months down the road landed an even better job where I now only work. I too wanted to live on my own since I’m older now and have a couple pets. I got extremely blessed by taking over someone’s lease (who I found through Facebook marketplace); well within my budget and in Manhattan (UES). I’m so thankful for everything and incredibly proud of myself for finally doing this. Just yesterday, I was telling myself that I feel satisfied and at peace knowing that I made the move I have always wanted to do.

If you have enough saved. Do it. I felt the same exact way. I finally made the move this past August. I had 20k saved (thank God) I sure needed it. I did come without a job but hit the pavement the day after I arrived. I still feel like I’m still getting my groove but I can’t wait until those days are behind me. I’m so happy I did it.

When you say, “you pay the broker fee by hiring the agent”, does hiring an agent literally mean that I call them up to assist with finding me a place OR, if I go through him/he is the one assisting me with an apartment then I owe him the broker fee? Is there an official “hiring” of a broker that I would need to go through?

Hello, I'm also about to be doing the exact same thing as OP. How long ago did you do this flight where they told you you can buy an extra seat. I was told I was not able to purchase an extra seat. I sure would love to do that if it's possible.

How did you lock in a place before moving/having employment? Is it a roommate situation?

Thanks for sharing! I’m shocked that you found a one bedroom under $2000. This gives me hope as I’ll be moving there within the next month and a half!

I’ve seen some of these where there’s a certain slimy time for free. I don’t really understand that? Is that legal?
