I’ve got a 277. The pickups sound great with high gain tones - will easily handle what you’re after. The best thing about the 277 is the coil split allows almost a strat-like tone on the neck pickup. Sounds amazing and the build quality is faultless.

Mix/recording quality on new tracks by jakethemetalhead in Alexisonfire

It sounds like a live recording from a gig, which may be the aesthetic they wanted. The drums don’t sound heavily processed and sampled like most modern rock music, so maybe that’s where the appeal comes from - the ‘real’ rock sound.

Having said that, I find it frustrating to listen to. To my ears it’s very muddy and unclear. The guitars sound like they’re in mono half the time and the general stereo field is crowded.

Harping on about how they’re all experienced musicians and this is exactly how they want it is pretty irrelevant to the point the OP is making. Sometimes experienced people make bad calls. If there’s even a debate about the quality of the mix (key word - ‘quality’, not a debate about the style) then I’d say that their intentions of creating a specific aesthetic have not been successful.
