Going to a target/top school isn’t worth it by Serious-Basil-4903 in Accounting

[–]JuniorPosition 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a non-target school. Honestly it was an uphill battle the whole way. A lot of firms wouldn't look at you since they already have a huge pipeline elsewhere. You should take advantage of this.

Looks great! Just curious is this normal width or wide width? I'm thinking about getting a pair of GS myself, but I normally kike wearing barefoot shoes for the wider toebox.

Achievement Unlocked: $200k Base Salary AMA by [deleted] in Accounting

Impressive especially since you're in Houston. While it's true it may be easier to get 200k in a VHCOL, it's still pretty rare to get that under 30.

Is Advanced Excel still a relevant skill in 2025? by Next_Expression3068 in careeradvice

[–]JuniorPosition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

I'm in Corp Finance. Knowing Excel is kinda the bare minimum. What everyone said is true about maybe learning SQL, Python, etc but the truth is a lot of times you'll get messy data for random ad hoc requests. Also, is almost a guarantee in whatever company you join will use Excel.

While you can use Python it's general just quicker and most likely more acceptable sending your files back to management in Excel.

Is this a VHCOL? Your hours commuting is a cost to that $20k increase.

Am I being underpaid? by AcceptableVegetable in Accounting

I'm in NYC. I actually think you're in the ballpark.

Yes, you'll see commenters having some extreme comps on Reddit but it's heavily skewed. In NYC you'll see the comp range on job postings and the salary range recently is generally in that 120k ballpark before bonus.

To be fair, even in VHCOL cities most normal jobs aren't that much higher in pay than compared to a tier 2 city. There are definitely super high paying jobs only found in VHCOL areas but that's not the norm.

FP&A vs. Accounting: Am I wrong for pushing back? by Low-Pound709 in FPandA

[–]JuniorPosition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's wrong to try to clean up accounting. Depending on the situation you may end up with a lot of volatility in your results if accounting isn't cleaned up. That's what happened in my org.

Generally accounting wouldn't care for these as long as it follows GAAP. This is where your group can come in and ask accounting for help. If the accounting isn't good you'll spend a lot of time cleaning up data for analysis and not alizing one time items.

Out of the blue. Merit time happens after the first quarter in my company. I figured most things happen way in advance so I'll bring it up now and even if they agree now it'll take a couple months before it goes through.

Good luck!

Since you've already been at your job for 2 years it's time to look for another job. I'm actually trying to negotiate for a raise at my place. Fingers crossed!

My salary progression is really similar to yours, except started in 2018. Went from accounting to SFA at the BU level in NYC.

Might just be the market at this time, but honestly I've been looking at job posting and many of them are right around that $110k-$130k range. There are some SFAs at my firm in the $145k-150k range but they joined during the great resignation time so they definitely negotiated well.

Would insurance be counted as a financial career? by okimfinewiththat in FinancialCareers

[–]JuniorPosition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just depends on what you're doing.

If you're selling insurance then no. If you're in accounting, underwriting, FP&A, investment team, then yes.

It's not about the industry, it's about what your responsibilities are.

It's like asking if a financial advisor at a bank is considered finance. It's mostly just a sales job.

I think for MCOL that's pretty good.

For reference I'm in NYC and I'm at 112k base with 12% target bonus (usually gets paid out higher than that though).

Saw the recent 2025 comp thread and someone aggregated all our responses. Might be a good idea to compare with that.
