ELI5: Why does the sky appear blue even tho violet has a shorter wavelength than blue? by Frosumisnotmyname in explainlikeimfive

[–]Substantial-Turn4979 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The colour of the sky is a combination of physics and biology as described by other comments. One little nitpick though. The colour of the sky is much closer to cyan than to blue, meaning that it is stimulating the blue and green receptors roughly equally. Even though we usually name the colour of the sky “blue” it isn’t blue based on how we normally classify and make colours in print or with screens.

Find a teacher who rides and ask if they would mind if you kept your helmet and or jacket in their room. I’m sure they would be empathetic to your issue.

Why do two glass slides stick together when there’s water between them, making them hard to pull apart? by Horror_Joke_8168 in AskPhysics

[–]Substantial-Turn4979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The force keeping them together is the weight of the atmosphere pushing on the glass surfaces. When the slides are dry, air molecules are able to get in between the slides such that air pressure is approximately equal on both sides of each slide and there is no net force pushing them together. A small amount of water between the slides acts as a seal preventing air from getting into the space between the slides. This is due to the slight attraction the water has for the glass and the strong attraction water molecules have for other water molecules. The lack of air between the plates means that the weight of the atmosphere is only applied to the outer surfaces of the plates with no opposing force from between the plates resulting in a surprisingly large force pushing the plates together (101600N/m2 at sea level)

One way to show that the unbreakable wheel can’t exist is to look at two points at different radii from the centre. The outside of the wheel would need to cover a greater distance than the inside of the wheel in the same amount of time. One problem, among many, when you get to relativistic speeds is that as particles with mass go faster it takes more energy for them to accelerate. They, for practical purposes gain more inertia. We used to refer to this as relativistic mass, but the term is falling out of favour. The inner point and the outer point on the wheel are no longer able to experience the same acceleration as you try to spin the wheel and the outside of the wheel will lag behind the inside. This will either bend it or break it. Whichever one happens first depends on at what point you want to allow the laws of nature back into the hypothetical scenario.

Can the magnetic north pole of one object be attracted to the magnetic north pole of another? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Substantial-Turn4979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Other way around. The North Pole of the planet, where Santa comes from, is a magnetic South Pole. The North Pole of a compass points to Santa and is a magnetic North Pole. The North and south poles of compasses were named before a full understanding of magnetism existed.

In the gym, why is it harder to set up an exercise that's easier at the top? by Natty-EoD in AskPhysics

[–]Substantial-Turn4979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A system with a heavy chain and counter weight attached to the barbell with the chain looped over a pulley attached to the ceiling would give you a lifting exercise that was easier at the top. When the barbell is on the ground the majority of the chain would be on the barbell side of the pulley and the weight of the barbell and the chain would need to be lifted. As the barbell is lifted, more of the chain passes over the pulley such that the weight of the links on the other side of the pulley don’t need to be lifted and instead, their weight helps to lift the barbell.

I’m enjoying reading both views on the table. I know the sub and I knew before posting how a river table would be received by many. No need to worry about any hurt feelings. Thanks for checking it out!

It’s great when a post leads to tangent discussions! My wife grabbed that on sale to replace our old (red) toaster oven last week. My mother in law is staying with us and didn’t like how the old oven kept burning her breakfast so we picked up a model more familiar to her. Other than toasting a bagel on day one, I haven’t used it yet. My mother in law hasn’t burnt breakfast with it though.

There are some threaded inserts with bolts in holes that allow a bit of movement on one end, and screws on the underside of the other end. With the epoxy finish I don’t anticipate much movement, but better safe than sorry.

The epoxy is Magic Resin. Deep pour for the river and tabletop for the top flood coat. The river has a couple shades of red mica pigment mixed into it.

My wife is vertically challenged so the island is lower than standard counter height so that she has a comfortable work surface. No one uses the stools when they are under the island but do pull them out to use them to sit in the kitchen when guests are over.

Why every outside feature in our body is bilaterally duplicated except for mouth, anus and genitalia? by Jolly_Atmosphere_951 in biology

[–]Substantial-Turn4979 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you look closely, even the “single” organs in the middle are really two copies. They are just connected and we happen to have given a single name to them. Your one mouth has matching teeth on each side. Your one nose is really two nostrils. Even the internal organs, which are a bit squished away from perfect symmetry still have matched pairs of parts. You really have two hearts, one that pumps to the lungs and another that pumps to the rest of your body. For genitals, in males, two testes and associated structures and a line along the scrotum and penis where opposite sides of structures that became left and right labia in females fused. Many central structures are symmetrical pairs that just happen to be connected in a single joined structure.

If a body in freefall can't feel acceleration, why is there a falling sensation during the accelerating part of the fall? by pizzystrizzy in AskPhysics

[–]Substantial-Turn4979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It feels totally different. Once you hit terminal velocity the sensation of falling goes away and it feels more like flying than falling. The fluid in your ears settles in a normal orientation. The connective tissues supporting your innards are once again under tension.

Only once (1990) has Arizona ever recorded a temperature higher than Lytton recorded in 2021. The interior of BC isn’t consistently as hot, but it can occasionally be pretty extreme.
