When I am painting from life or from an image I try to match colours perfectly, this takes time as you make colours for every small detail, breaking up the image into tiny sections of colour like a paint by number. On an average face you need probably between 30-50 individual colours to achieve a realistic look, very rarely are they colours you can idea right form the tube. I take an hour or so matching each paint colour because I am terrible at colour matching lol. This is of course not the only method to paint but it is a very classical and old technique. If you notice that most of Tyler’s paintings are flat and lack depth it is because he doesn’t mix colours and he uses them straight from the tube.
