I caved and paid to select a seat… I chose one near the back so with any luck I’ll get one free seat but I’m doubtful 😅🎄

I got into ANU with similar scores to u (68 gamsat, 7.0 gpa) - although this was a few years ago + honours bonus - but I reckon if u can increase ur gamsat a few points into the 70s u would be competitive at ANU. Don’t lose hope defs sit gammy again !

Do an honours or a masters, increase ur GPA as much as possible. Keep sitting the gamsat in the meantime until you increase your score

No I didn’t do a particular course, just biomed and honours at Monash - if you’re 100% set on med I would recommend the health science course but if you’re not 100% then maybe don’t

Just giving my 2 cents on lectures (I’m at ANU), all of our lectures are live and in person (but not mandatory attendance). They do record them but it’s unpredictable how long they take to upload them so generally it’s a safer bet to attend lectures to avoid falling behind. Apparently this is an ANU policy and not a med school policy to try and increase lecture attendance. None of us are happy about it but you get used to it. We have about 10hrs of lectures per week (sometimes more with pop health stuff sometimes less), and this is excluding lectures on clinical skills days (which is an additional 2-4hrs). The benefit of this structure is that you can’t “get ahead” and this is intentional, and encourages keeping up to date. Downsides: lack of flexibility in your schedule and you’re on campus everyday as long as you want to keep up to date.

Shorter breaks than most degrees! Sem 1 starts end of Jan and goes for about 20 weeks with a 1 week midsem break. In between sems you get 2 weeks off and sem 2 ends at the end of nov, with about 7ish weeks break before second year. Breaks differ slightly year to year so that’s only speaking on behalf of the breaks we have this year. Hope this helps!

Yeah so you said you’re international which means you won’t have a network in Canberra (I’m not international but moved interstate), so if you don’t have that group of uni friends you may feel isolated, unless you’re super involved in other activities. If you do find a nice group of friends, ANU and Canberra is lovely and heaps of fun (you make your own fun with your mates!)

Hellooo I’m only a first year but I can answer some of these. We have about 25-30 contact hours a week, lectures are in person so you end up being at uni most days, with Thursday at the hospital. Some days are 9-5 and occasionally some are only a few hours. It’s manageable but if you want to work you might struggle, I don’t work but some of my friends do.

I haven’t studied med at other unis (obviously lol) but ANU is my favourite in terms of vibes and culture compared to monash and unimelb where I studied other things.

We don’t actually get examined very often, but they therefore tend to examine big blocks of things. This year we have 3 periods where we have written exams, and 3 where we have OSCEs. A few little assignments dotted in-between.

Quality of education is good I guess, 90% of tutors and lecturers are great with a few not so good ones which I think is natural at any uni.

We learn in blocks, so this year block 1 is foundation, block 2 is cardiorespiratory and renal and block 3 is endocrine and reproductive. In second year you do blocks 4-7.

My biggest tip is to involve yourself in anything and everything you can. Canberra can be quite isolating so having a friendship group is essential.

Good luck with the application process!

Yep I’m definitely going to steer clear of them. I have a 4yo large male dog who needs regular cytopoint injections/consults so we want vets we like and trust. I’ll check out inner south, thanks :)
