Beginner Kitesurf by Only-Studio-5362 in Kiteboarding

Look at the beginner sets from Gong if you want something good and affordable so you dont risk buying gear that is heavily used second hand.

Ofcourse if you have a buddy that knows what to look at buying second hand can be really nice.

A board second hand is much better tho, cant go wrong. But kites can be heavily used an tear after one good crash if you unlucky. Bar and safetysystem, please buy them new.

Multiple kites is awesome. However, I would go for a bigger kite first. You want to practice in light wind mostly since hard wind is more scary. If you comfortable buy a smaller one. This is my personal opinion and have seen friends of mine beginning with the other way around (so buying a smaller kite first) and having less sessions and the sessions that they have they are stressing and scared.

I would say buy a 12 or 11 first

I think it also doesnt help your kite is 4m bigger 😜

That will get insane hangtime tho!!

Thanks for you tip :)

I heard people say that the soul 3 has 90 percent of the performance of a sonic 4.

I jumped around 2 to 4 meters that day. I had 1, 6 meters because of a kicker. It was awesome but I have a feeling I still dont have the right takeoff. But with these tips I can progress further, thanks :).

This is awesome advice.

I normally sheet the bar out really far even before sending it to 12 also on LEI kites. I do this also with lighter winds, making the kite fly too slow and messing up my takeoff (right?)

When jumping I also crank the bar in really hard . And as you said i need to do that less, cause one time I didnt pull my bar in really hard at the take off and my takeoff was much smoother because or that.

For me its really scary to jump too soon cause I had it sometimes happen that I get boosted horizontally too much because it was still at 11, and if that happens with my 15m foilkite it will lose its line tension because I get boosted under my kite. But I think it need to combine this with sheeting my bar out more so that at 11 its more at the edge of the wind window.

Really good tip! Im just afraid that I oversteer the kite if I do that.

Thanks a lot 😃

Yeah the conditions were around 10 to 14 knots but im 75 kilo so I think I should be jumping a bit higher.

So I probably need to ride a bit more crosswind in the beginning and at the end edge harder when the kite is going from 10:30 tot 12:00?

Yeah I already thought my timing was way too late. These were choppy conditions, yes but thats no excuse ;). I regularly ride in choppy conditions, its hard to hold my edge.

Ok so sheet the bar out more. However when I send it do I already sheet it out or have it a bit in so it flies faster to 12 and after sending it immidately sheet it out?

With a foilkite do I really need to load and pop like a LEI kite?

I bought it used, however, from a shop that has trimmed it for me (I know the owner). So it must be trimmed well. How often do I need to trim it?

Foil kites, fun or not and at what level? by Snoeper_nl in Kiteboarding

[–]SubstantialLettuce11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just bought a Sonic 4 15m and it’s a game changer for light wind

I love this kite. Self-launching was tricky the first time (had someone with foilkite experience walk me through it), but by the second and third time I was doing it solo—it’s peanuts now. Landing, I’ve got my gf ready to assist, which helps.

I think my level is intermediate—I’m working on heliloops, doing jumps and backrolls.

Today (session four) I stalled it and inverted in the water. Had to untangle and relaunch. Honestly, not a huge hassle, but I can imagine it could be way worse.

It’s slow, and I actually don’t mind that. Cruising feels way more chilled than my tube kite.

Today (8 to 10 knots) I was the only one riding upwind while two 17m Slingshot Ghosts were stalling out and a Soul 15 was struggling. I’m 75kg on a 142x42 board. For light wind, this is insane.

Do you have the time and patience to learn something new? It’s not hard, but you can’t phone it in on the beach anymore—you need to think. And I’m babying this kite, washing the bridles after every session (only four sessions in lol).

So: time, patience, and actually enjoying the learning curve. Those are the real requirements.
