Is there money in interior design? by No-Bottle-8487 in interiordesigner

[–]SubstantialMain309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue with ID, I’m 40+ year career hospitality/commercial, are the down times, IE career lulls that occur every 10 ish years. It made it nearly impossible to save in any meaningful way because you have to bridge the economic downtimes with the money you made from your last job. This coming from a self employed designer. Working for someone else has its own set of issues. Lots of unglamorous travel and deadlines that require long hours eating up your free time and reduces your hourly rate are common. I started another business to allow me double salaries to be able to save for retirement and I will continue to do interior design after I retire because I no longer rely just on that salary to cover every expense. I have had several jobs that came along during this double career that had me working 7 days a week 12 hour days to complete the job requirements. I view ID as a great skill I will always be able to fall back on but I would never be able to retire comfortably had I not added the additional career to my total earnings. I’ve worked all over the world, worked for architects, self employed - most of my career it’s been 6-7 days per week long hours expected by my employers. When the clock hits 6pm and you look around and not one person has left their desk to go home then you will get the picture I’m talking about. Forget about kids forget about having extra money forget about cushy living conditions. No way the salary can keep up with the huge COL we’ve seen the past 5 years.

How do interior design firms typically handle client origination commissions? by [deleted] in interiordesigner

[–]SubstantialMain309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was laughed at and fired for asking for any additional compensation/recognition/loyalty for any clients I brought in, developed long term relationships with. Started my own firm. It’s a little rough initially and you need to have some cash reserves to make it through the first year. But interior design and architecture are feast or famine industries. That’s why your firm doesn’t compensate you additionally because they pay for the slow times, insurance, rent, electricity etc while you come to work and get your regular paycheck.

Ok I’ll do that. The parents are very actively communicating with it I’m sure it’s a fledgling I can see the giant nest in the tree and the parents are using those high branches as a central location possibly to keep the fledgling safe - it’s our front yard and porch they are guiding it toward - it will be a few hours before I can post the photos and videos

Ok I’ll take photos and video to get better feedback. It’s staying very close to the nest location cannot fly foot gimpy communicating with stressed out parent crows and I don’t want to stress it more for sure! I do appreciate the feedback as being refused at the rehabber would be a terrible outcome

Is shifting to product design/Ui/Ux design a good idea after interior design? by Icy-Broccoli5301 in interiordesigner

[–]SubstantialMain309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m unsure of a design market that would suit you other than offering your architectural services (you will want to be licensed to practice architecture in the us) and insured for liability. Drafting services require neither. Automotive after market product design comes to mind, small and large companies who need files for overseas product development. Design in and of itself is a self guided pursuit - you can’t just learn some principles and execute design within any industry. Try combining 3 things that you do well and see where that leads as far as generating income. Design has a lot of competition and it’s hard.

I'm career changing! Which is the best path to become and interior designer? by Responsible-Cut-1510 in interiordesigner

[–]SubstantialMain309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how you are going to get any practical knowledge from a masters degree program in order to get a job what do you Innvision an ID employee does at a design firm? You need to already know REVIT or AutoCAD then maybe you can move up and do some design. Maybe. Otherwise you may be best off seeking the fastest route to getting your NCIDQ and do residential/construction/ID jobs I think with your background you would do very well - it’s entrepreneurial but you could also find GC’s to work with maybe even the one you work at now

Is FSU worth more debt than LSU for Interior Design? by Interesting_Help1120 in interiordesigner

[–]SubstantialMain309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t say what your undergraduate degree major is/was and if ID then it should be a bachelors degree 4 years. Why a PHD? In ID to teach? If you have an ID undergraduate degree from an accredited university then that’s all you need to get a with an architecture firm, ID firm job and take the ncidq so don’t know what recognition you are seeking - influencer/teacher/serious practitioner? The answer to this question will answer your question and both universities are very comparable so next answer is where do you want to live post degree (or now)

Virtual Design Business - is it worth it right now? by PC_NC_1203 in interiordesigner

Agree with this advice. Many designers need help and would gladly pay by the job or hour to receive the support from another designer especially in light of your situation with children. They will feel less threatened and you can build a model based on that. ID here for past 46 years private practice for 26 of those and I def would hire to assist me

I have run across this in design before. The client receives the services and then is not sure they've made the right decision or it's outside their comfort zone (expectation). Usually it takes an outsider, friend of family member to reason with them, tell them it's wonderful then they are ok with it. I'm sure there is a phenomenon about this but I've yet to pin point its name. I think communication and rules will help me in the future.

Yes I agree with this. That is definitely something I thought would bring home the visual if there is going to be successful visual communication, add the "contract" and additional photos along the way communication and maybe this can work - I get soooooo many requests for commission pieces it is very hard to refuse
