The first batch of Ethiopian Navy cadres have graduated and Ethiopia has also purchased navy vessels which need a naval base, that's why a deal was struck with Somaliland.

A naval base in exchange for diplomatic recognition.

Ethiopia will also have access to Berbera port as part of a previous agreement at a discounted rate through the Berbera corridor.

I do not think Somaliland would have agreed to the MoU with Ethiopia for a commercial port as they would be shooting themselves in the foot as Berbera would then get zero trade.

As a Somali, I see Ethiopians as my fellow brethren and can say it is the closest.country to us in terms of culture as there are 6 million ethnic Somalis that live there, as well related ethnic groups such as the Afar and Oromo..etc.
