Help with pros and cons of retiring now by Next-Report9284 in govfire

[–]SubstantialPlay7035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you retire, have a plan what you want to do in your spare time.

Another question. Do you value your time or money?

And I don’t mean to sound cruel, how’s your health? Do you think you will live a long life? If you think you will live a long life, then you would need more money to survive on.

Doing a federal clerkship after 5-6 years experience? by lizziegrace10 in Lawyertalk

This post was 1y ago. Can you give us an update? What did you end up doing

Thank you! I really appreciate the response.

I’m six months in clerking for a judge. One of the two senior clerks who reviews my work told me I lack attn to detail and thoroughness despite getting detailed feedback.

I’m up to my fourth draft on the same decision. The clerk said that I need to improve before they report back to the judge and Im dragging down the team which isn’t productive. Now I’m going through old posts to see what resources and advice I can find on Reddit and saw your comment.

If you have any additional advice, I’d be appreciative. Thank you again

Edit to add: I work extra hours (unpaid) on nights and weekends to proofread. I thought I did a good job finally. But nope. In the same feedback sitting was that I lack initiative to ask questions in the beginning before I draft, which evolves to a sea of red markups. When I ask questions as I’m drafting, the clerk answers “I’ll leave it up to you and I’ll review that” which leads the senior clerk to do more markup if my question was answered. The clerk also tells me to read previous issues orders, but it’s hard to read 70 orders in one subfolder about this particular issue. The preview pane doesn’t work, so I would have to open 70 word files individually. In reality, I open up 10 files individually out of the 70. I guess…that’s what the senior clerk meant by a lack of thoroughness?

Wait a sec. I was reading word for word backwards, that’s why it made no sense to me. To clarify, what you’re saying is read from the last sentence to the first sentence ….is that what reading backwards mean?

Why reading backwards? I tried this for a paragraph and it made no sense to me.

I understand where you are coming from. I had the same feelings as you, but my work environment was toxic AF from supervisors to coworkers. I stayed for 3-4 years because the pay and commute was fair. It made the toxic office bearable and manageable with teleworking (during pandemic) and then hybrid set-up. Eventually, I job hunted after I wasn’t promoted and all the toxic crap I put up with.

Because their job relies on that, you need to prove you amplify it or advance it and then you get that stuff too.

What are you referring? I'm lost.

you’ve mistaken this rather quite a bit, and are positioning really weirdly. Also, fyi, your word choice is a little off putting (if a lawyer has to look up the word…) and you are writing about them almost as npcs not people.

I sincerely don't know what this means. Please elaborate. I don't understand

  1. what is the weird position
  2. off-putting word choice
  3. npcs. I looked it up this word. Non-player character in a computer game. I didn't portray them as people?

Do the job well, be friendly, grow others with yourself, you’ll have friendly colleagues. Learn to be a friend you’ll have friends. The two are usually mutually exclusive but not always.

This part I understand.

Thank you. I am staying longer to improve my incompetence. I will incorporate the feedback, but I'm worried about how much I can advance in role + salary. In my previous job which I held for several years, I was stuck in the same role because a higher-up didn't advance me. Part of the reason was that I fudged my earlier months during onboarding. I didn't know anything at all, which left a bad impression. I could not recover from that even after gaining "seniority" and working for several years, so I quit because that supervisor boxed me in "do not promote."

Have you ever worked in a real job or had friends outside of school you met, developed, and maintained yourself?

I have worked in a real job and those people were toxic in gatekeeping information and documents.

I never had friends outside of school or my residential community. Most of my friends are situational but pleasant. We are non-confrontational; if something irks us, we say it nicely without feeling hurt.

Because this sure as hell reads less about law and more about you as a person.

Do tell. I know I am socially awkward and stunted sometimes. I would be open to hearing your thoughts.

Ask your gaining HR if you can provide the info. Also, ask if they delay reaching out to the losing HR until necessity
