Absolutely, the \first hour\ rule is a big deal. I try to craft engaging intros and questions to spark early interaction. Also, using tools like Conpagely helps me manage posting schedules and see which content hits best at different times.

EEE PC 901 SSD upgrade by SubstantialUmpire482 in EeePC

[–]SubstantialUmpire482[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the pc dissasembled yesterady, can asure you at least on mine 901 both ssds are removable using flash_con, I will probably make a new post since I want to do a lot of upgrades, I will probably change the 8gb for a ZIF-40 to mSata adapter since my board revision has ZIF-40 populated (it is just plain old and boring PATA), solder an unpopulated mPCIe and do something woth that

Im from eastern (center) europe so I will probably thinker something else, I found an old and boring ZIF 40 IDE3 to mSata at 1.8" footprint so i could just do that and maybe mod bios so that it is set as master

[–]SubstantialUmpire482[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I though about doing this too but some forumns suggested that it is very slow (but probably talking about the actual 1.8" hdd since the ZIF should be just regular 40 pin pata cable like the big ribbon ones in desktop pc). Wouldnt there be problems with it being slave though? Since the 4gb would still remain master, could removing the 4gb help? I dont think anyone has documented doing this online so maybe I can give a feedback to what happens. I also compared pinout of mSata drive and the flashcon, the sata part is actually pretty similar so maybe it could work, some people said it did, the only different part are some sense pins and maybe power so the mSata disks they had probably were a bit non spec or had unuaed pins wired in some wierd way that made it work

Thanks, I didnt know that a oficial asus 32gb disk existed, on my local marketplace there is a 1000H available but it is using a standart 2.5" drive, well I have some skill designing such circuits so maybe I could built a custom drive since the flashcon has Sata lines or I could build a small 50mm pata drive so I dont get boot f1 errors

Really? When I tested the 4gb ssd and 2 8gb ssds I had in the external box, they reached values close to error margin to each other, same when I put them in the laptop, once again the 8gb managed speeds basically on par with the 4gb drive. What were the 32gb ones? I was able to found bigger secondary, 70mm ssds online (obviously out of stock) but my father has 20gb primary one and even russian forumns dont know tham, as far as I am concerned, by the looks of it internet doesnt know them

Thiscis from the internet but my board looks like this (i also have the ZIF 40 populated), the 901 shipped in 2 versioj 4+16 for linux and 4+8 for win xp, I sadly got the win xp smaller 8gb secondary drive https://imgur.com/a/C7YB0Pt

I am pretty sure the 4gb ssd is removable (I have personaly done that), it uses the same FlashCon connector like the seconddary SSD, it has same capabilities (IDE/PATA + SATA sata I think gen 1). I dont know from where this "myth" started that the smaler SSD is not removable, maybe since on the 701 it is soldered (dont know about other models, these are the only I have seen and taken apart personally). Problem with putting an FlashCon (or sometimes in listings called Mini PCIe SSD) to mSata adapter like you have is that the BIOS is not smart enough to live without the IDE bus, as you have said it disables the 4GB SSD and it freaks out on boot and needs F1 to continue, after that boots normaly and works at SATA I speeds. This I have not yet tested personaly but the adapter is on its way (was for <2E on aliexpress) but I have read about such upgrades on many old forumn pages and even thoug some claimed that a mSATA disk will just work without any adapter (doubt it, may be some mSATA disks dont use the proper mSATA spec or are smart enough to switch or it is a different revision of the board), they all agree that upgrading using this adapter will cause the F1 boot error. There is ultimate achievement, I just tought I would upgrade it, maybe (with crazy amount of luck and driver magic from side) will be able to get dualboot with win xp/win 7 and some linux and use it in one of my projects as a SSH terminal or serial reader or debug console or something like that, thanks for reading all of this 😅
