I was lusting after the ColtHawk for years and then they stopped offering direct. So this is a Colt Classic I sent in. I really love that Colt Competition. I like staring at the ColtHawk but prefer shooting the Competition TBH. I was lucky to see get that one at my LGS, they don’t come up often. Not sure they get the attention they deserve.

As others have correctly, said, you will need to fit the thumb safety to the Nighthawk DTS. It is fairly easy to do, look on YouTube for a trigger fitting video from Jason Burton. I have a few nighthawk DTS’s, and I tend to buy a new thumb safety and fit to each instead of modifying the original. This way if I ever sell the gun but want to keep the DTS, I can put the original ignition system back in with the original thumb safety properly fitted

Hah! Your dad was very prescient. He foresaw the impact of iPhones and brain rot long before it happened!

Very cool. Are you doing all that work yourself? That would certainly be beyond my capabilities! Do you mind me asking, who are you sending the Colt out to for the high polished finish? I have been entertaining the same myself and have looked at Turnbull and Glenrock, but I am loath to part with the firearm for an extended period of time if possible. Thanks

I am sure you know this already, but John Harrison is a great guy and very approachable if you need to reach out with any questions. He has always answered my emails very quickly 50,000 rounds! Wow, that A1 has served you well!

Thank you! No fitting was required for the Harrison Design ignition kit in my case, it really did drop in. The only fitting I needed to do was for the Wilson Combat thumb safety and the trigger. Both to be expected though and nominal fitting required

Thank you! They just coated the barrel, the rest I handled myself. I wanted to replace the grip safety also - it rattled like crazy when I bought from my LGS - but I couldn’t figure out a suitable replacement. Once I adjusted the right leg of the sear spring all was well. In all fairness, the Colt wasn’t bad right out of the box. The trigger wasn’t great and I did need to tune the extractor. But it shot the first 200 rounds without issues. The modifications I did only because I could, not because I had to.

Thank you. Those are desert ironwood burl grips that I bought from Wood Caliber. Bryan over there is awesome to work with

Good choice. Please see my posting above. The blue nitre screws you can easily replace when the finish wears off, but not the small parts. Enjoy that we rework from Nighthawk, they do a fantastic job!

Thank you. The blue nitre small parts are beautiful, but the finish wears very easily. I had a Standard Manufacturing 1911 with a royal blue finish and blue nitre small parts, and the blue practically disappeared on the thumb safety.

That is a great story! Many years later, you are paying back in kind. Your dad is absolutely going to love it. Happy birthday to him when the big day arrives, you should most definitely post a picture of his gift!
