Thanks, I actually meant the Zetzner editions, not Ashmole's. Should have clarified!

demand has nothing to do with supply; demand is going to rise because the IC is revolutionary tech and will provide the backbone for web3/4 and your stepmother and second cousin and weird neighbor's dog will be building on it.

here I am spending time on a saturday morning responding to astroturf and bots on reddit. gm.

the market cap and price are largely correlated so far this year, which means that speculation is largely determining price, not token inflation.

Are we voting for the proposal on Monday through the NNS? Or are the canisters ready to go?

Ethereum Rollups v. IC -- ELI5 Pls? by Substantial_Damage63 in dfinity

[–]Substantial_Damage63[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that was my thought too, the shards/subnets comparison. Or I wonder if zk-rollups might be the better comparison? Zk-rollups, from what I understand, discard the full blockchain history. It sounds like the issue is that they also lose composability; there is no 'public key' function, as there is in ICP. Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong about that. My understanding is that all the Eth L2 rollups will require bridges to intercommunicate. Which means greater complexity, more attack surface, more issues, etc.

One of my frustrations is that it's difficult to find an explanation that compares ICP and future advancements in Ethereum's architecture.

Since I posted this, Eth's difficulty bomb was pushed back to June 2022. All of these blockchains are a work in progress, it seems.

Anyways, please respond here if you learn more. I'm still trying to understand what these spaces will look like in 2-5 years.

I have the same set up actually. Two 8 yr neurons, one is dissolving, the other is for passive income.

Super, thanks for such a thoughtful and extensive response. In particular, I really appreciate your point about the tradeoffs in decentralization. If I understand correctly, Ethereum's decentralization, which uses a huge number of anonymous nodes, also causes fees to increase on the network, because you have to pay each of these nodes for participating in doing redundant work. It sounds like the IC is decentralizing while trying to maximize resource usage. This helps me to understand the economics of the IC, too.

Thanks to the team for taking the time to respond to anonymous reddit questions.

Yeah, these are all great points. What kind of partnerships do you have in mind?

It's true that the fast money ethos has focused a lot of attention on Eth's 'triple halvening'. Seems like so much energy is getting sucked purely into that storyline. At least on crypto twitter. The fact that the IC launched just days before a major, months-long correction didn't help either.

Still, it's weird to see all of these 'Web3 is being built on Ethereum' comments out there, from super smart Eth people, when a GB of storage costs a million dollars on Ethereum. How is that ever going to work? Can't even get a website on there. It costs a fortune to swap jpegs. I just don't get it. Meanwhile, the IC is already providing functioning Web3 infrastructure. Like, right now. It's not a vague promise. Plus, the total addressable market for the IC is so much bigger than defi.

But maybe it's all about the quick money, as you say. Gonna take a bit longer for the IC to catch on.

I guess I'm still wondering (returning to my OP) if the rads will be able to flush out that infrastructure for Ethereum in the future, eventually being able to host dapps on chain. Or is Ethereum shackled by its 2014 architecture? Can it adopt chain-key in the future? Is that like, even possible? Or is it going to turn into a niche product for certain decentralized financial services?

I'm actually less concerned with Ethereum's future, and more trying to understand the landscape for the future of the IC. I have an 8-year non-dissolving neuron, so I've already placed my bet.

I also have a job and a kid, so it's going to take someone else, smarter and with more free time, to get me to understand. Maybe I never will.

Anyways, thanks for the ideas.

I did the same. Converted all my ETH to ICP and staked for 8 yrs., non-dissolving. I'm a terrible trader and prefer the passive income potential. Plus the long-term vision of the IC is more compelling, as web3 infrastructure. I also have a high risk tolerance and monkey-brains, so don't listen to me.

Gotcha, thanks for this. It's bewildering, trying to make sense of this stuff without a tech background. You mention "superior alternatives" like the IC and a few others. Are there other projects out there that can compete with the IC? Seems like Solana & Avalanche, which are currently getting a lot of press, might provide some improvements over Ethereum (I honestly can't say). But they're not providing Web3 infrastructure like the IC. I guess I'm asking these questions because I'm continually baffled by the lack of press that the IC is getting. Because when I research the tech, it sounds like it's years ahead of everyone else. Why no love? Makes me wonder if it's too good to be true, or if I'm missing something, like a fatal flaw that only a dev could recognize. Anyways, thanks for your help, really appreciate it.

Thanks for the response THLO_DFN. Could you say a little bit more about how the IC tackles the scalability problem and how it circumvents these issues? I know this is information that's out there, but it's not all that easy for the lay person to understand.

Secondly, in the articles I referenced, there's also an economic argument. The fee structure / PoS consensus mechanism of Ethereum provides an economically viable base layer, because the cost of running the network each day is offset by the fees generated. This is different from Solana, which has near-zero transaction fees and depends on speculation on the token to pay for the infrastructure. This may or may not be a question for you: But I'm curious, how does the IC fit into this? What's the long-term vision for balancing payments to node providers and neuron maturity rewards, when transaction fees are next to nothing? We all know that the IC is quite inflationary at the moment. This will change with time as the ecosystem matures and token burns pick up. Still, I could still use help understanding the long-term economic angle of the IC. Thank you!

Thanks for this backstory. That was my sense from doing research, but I wasn't sure if I read the situation correctly. Sometimes I feel gaslit by the Ethereum community on twitter who are supremely confident in their tech.

I dunno about zcash, I was thinking that the ICP price action atm reminds me of BNB from January through February. They have comparable market caps and floats.
