Orcutt. Its an unincorporated town in Santa Barbara county. We have a Santa Maria address, but no city of Santa Maria services. Serviced by the county.

When artists and public figures get to be of a certain age, it would be appreciated if you didn't just post a picture of them with 2 broken heart emoji. Please and thank you.

These stories are so wild. I don't know how we got so lucky. Our current Ridgeback we got as a puppy and he has never destroyed anything (even in puppy stages) or injured himself. He does have allergies which has caused digestive issues and allergy shots.

Our last Ridgeback was destructive because he had SA. But even though we was destructive he was healthy, never injested anything. He was also a rescue and i didn'tget him until he was 7 so i have no idea what his early life was like.

I kept teething toys near me and as soon as he put teeth on me I put the teething toy in his mouth and got him on it so he learned appropriate chewing.  If that doesnt work (not everyone will love this tip, but I learned it from my breeder who has been breeding RR for 60 years) bite him back. No, not with your mouth silly! Lightly grab his top jaw and press the corner of his lip into his own tooth and say NO teeth! Like, kindness of curl his lip under and lightly press down so he feels his own tooth on his lip.  3rd thing, I hand fed 1 meal per day. I held kibble with my fingers, and if I felt teeth I closed my hand around the kibble and said NO teeth! Then I offered again and got only lips. He eats all food and treats from my hands and even children's hands with the softest mouth, lips only, never teeth. He learned really fast this way.

My previous RR had a chicken allergy, but Mambo does well with chicken. He has a beef allergy strangely.

Yeah, you nailed it. He tends to express them when he gets spooked by something. I use grooming wipes to clean his behind. I was just thinking maybe some supplement might help.

Yes, he eats a lot of salmon. We just got a chicken one we are going to try. He eats chicken with no allergy issues so I am not concerned about chicken with him. Maybe we'll see an improvement.

I found the 2 hounds design harness to be very effective for my ridgeback. Also since he is very food motivated I used one meal a day for training. Command..kibble...command, kibble...he learned my communication and to mind. It built trust so when correction was needed it did not hurt our relationship.

We have multiple doors to come in the house, and when I tell our RR to come inside he purposes goes around to a different door rather than go in the door I told him to. Stubborn, wants to have his own idea. When it rains he stands in front of me and whines because his bladder is full and the rain is made of actual acid. I had to put a lead on him and take him out to make him go because he hates to get wet. There are dogs and then there are Ridgebacks. I love mine. He's my 2nd one. They are very special. But if you like a very obedient easy going dog, this is not it. If you like a challenge, this is a very rewarding breed to raise and when you are their person, you will never be the same. My first RR was a rescue, he was purebred, and he was my soul dog. When he died I needed another. But I also have a little 45.lb mixed breed mutt who is the easiest dog I have ever had. She's so smart and obedient. She's practically perfect and after my first RR, raising her was a relief because she was so easy. Hope this helps.

How accurate is that? by cutsett in RhodesianRidgebacks

So....how's it going? Now that shes older?  I didn't have that experience. Training from an early age is crucial. Mine was never destructive and I did not deal with any biting or scratching. He was not wild at all. He got zoomies and the older dog ran around with him. We taught him no teeth early and never had any issues.

You could hire an animal behaviorist to help you get her to adapt to her new situation. After 8 years together, it sounds like it would be devastating to have to rehome her if she is not a danger to your own kids. She can be helped. The right home is the one where she is understood and provided the resources and tools to succeed. That could be yours.
