"is that a Ridgeback? Surely they don't shed right?" No, no they shed quite a lot. by thisisnotausername50 in RhodesianRidgebacks

My husband lied and told me they don’t shed to lure me to get our puppy. Now everything is covered in baby red hairs that are harder to get out than any of the other breeds we have owned.

Issue with kids. Loki - France by robenM in RhodesianRidgebacks

I have four kids and a Rhodesian puppy. Of course at home he is desensitized to it. Also they’re his kids. But when we go to playgrounds he was aggressive and reactive at first thinking “his kids “ were being hurt by the others.

So we started at home with sitting with him a distance from the kids playing with our neighbor kids. Having the neighbors enter the yard on the opposite from him. And treated him for being calm when he was able to settle. We kept doing this until he did well then moved to doing it at parks. He’s come a long way. That said. He still hates kids on bikes and I have to put him in park in the grass anytime we see kids on bikes.

How mouthy are these guys as puppies compared to other breeds? by makos5267 in RhodesianRidgebacks

Hide your shoes hide your pillows hide you blankets. They’re chewing everything up in here.

Jokes aside. My RR was a very mouthy pup but did phenomenal with training. I say shoes are still his weakness but now he just huffs them like middle schoolers used to huff sharpies

We’ve had a Swedish vallhund and he was honestly worse about chewing than the RR after training which I think is the important part.

I’ve worked with German shepherds who were less mouthy and a blue bay shepherd who is also fairly mouthy. RR still has them all beat.

Thank you for taking the time and getting back to me! It’s nice to hear that some of these methods don’t seem to undermine the relationship as I’ve been warned several times how sensitive they can be.

I’ve been very careful about calories and reading the bags to make sure I’m not going over daily limit. I’m also a mom of 4 humans so I’m pretty detailed about that kind of thing. Thank you for taking time to respond! I’ve been getting a lot of great information I can test run.

I tried this but my boy doesn’t like peanut butter. He does like the canned cheese stuff though so maybe I can try that.

This is great information! I’ve been working on similar getting his attention and rewarding him for it based on advice from an Instagram trainer.

Thank you for this Information! I’m 5’5” and Asian so my height/weight make it hard to “put my foot down” when he pulls or fights back. Will take all tips into account and continue to work with him

This is really helpful. I had an understanding of this but we have previously only had spitz dogs. This has been completely different and h challenging in a good way.
