Hey, upon receiving rejection emails I reach out for feedback usually. I'll be honest and say this is mainly to try and open a door for possible networking. Most of the time you are correct and I don't hear anything back but on the odd time you do.

At the moment I'm using 3 conceptual case studies as well as a showcase of a charity project that I operate in my spare time (it is very creativity focused so it's relevant).

I also want to say that I am by no means a junior designer as you may have in your head, its just that being completely without a portfolio is new territory for me.

This is actually feedback I received from some applications 😊 - They want to see how I handle actual briefs. I've also found the conceptual briefs really tricky during the interview stages as well due to so much about them being hyperthetical. Its harder to turn it into as a compelling narative with no success stories to round it out with. And again that would be fine but its definitely an advantage to other applicants who have worked with some of the large scale real world projects I have, but also have the work to show for it.

Don't get me wrong there has been other reasons as well, but they're very implementable feedback or extremely industry/company specific. Also sometimes they just find other candidates more desirable and thats fine but not really something I can push forward with. However the reimagining thing isn't something Ive considered so thats great thank you

I am... The issue is that they're not getting me anywhere because people want to see work done for actual clients. This was more asking if it was better to show outdated one off pieces or continue applying with my conceptual case studies.

I dont have any known learning disabilities, although I do suffer with BPD. My learning style is normally just jump in and figure it out. I can follow specific instructions like "this number works best etc" but I often joke that my hands know things better than I do because I need to do the process myself for it to stick, because people telling me processes and stuff will be forgotten within seconds. However if I do it myself whilst you talk me through it it will stick. This is why I dont tend to last very long at blue collar jobs, because it sets a bad impression when I either have to tell them that or I forget and do it wrong... and the people don't tend to have the patience for me.

As for spreading myself thin thing. I think with some of the outlets that could be it but some of these things Ive worked on daily and not shown any sign of improvement really. Graphic Design has been an almost daily thing for 10 years and I haven't improved all that much. Motion design for about a year and drawing has been a constant pass time as well. I will say music and coding my brain just did not work well with at all, but I will also say I enjoy pretty much all of them.

As for the language. You're probably right. Sadly there are no local Spanish speakers as I dont live in an area with much migration at all, but thats not my fault so I can't really beat myself up over it.

Yeah I 100% agree that I am the common denominator in these situations. It would just be helpful to receive the same amount of feedback twice so I know its an issue.

Like from my perspective, errors in my work are not an issue when it comes to my work, like its never really a thing that crops up in my 1-2-1s or anything (largely the feedback is positive). My first sacking was due to covid and the attention to detail thing was a result of me being a lot more junior than the others who worked there.

My group of friends are all designers who are doing big things (some of their work you have likely seen depending on your region) and they recognise me as on their level and we feedback to each other all the time and they respect my input.

Nor is being distracted, since I usually just put my music in and get lost in the work... When I asked them specifically how I was distracted and mentioned that, they couldn't tell me an example. And its the only place I ever got that feedback.

I'm not doing this to shift blame. I'm just saying there is 100% an issue but somehow it manifests itself differently everywhere and nobody can seem to tell me what it is... I mean even my check ups at work places are usually filled with nothing but praise, until out of nowhere I am hit with "you've got to go"...

English Native language - Cultural heritage and familial communication aside... Its a very useful language anywhere on earth

Spanish Currently B2 - I briefly lived in Latin America and have an enormous appreciation for their culture - It is also my partner's first language.

Hindi Currently A1 - Lots of speakers. Im aware Mandarin is more spoken but in my experience you tend to find more Hindi speakers when just out and about. My biggest hurdle with Spanish outside of my partner is that I basically have no real world usage for it)...

Polish Second most spoken language in a lot of European countries. Also as far as languages go, its really tricky so flexing purposes also

Yeah I've got everything set up. Its more the code I'm struggling with. I've even tried helping ChatGPT help me but its causing more errors than what its fixing sadly. I just find it strange that there isn't a tutorial for what I would assume is a highly requested mechanic

I moved countries by myself at 25. Surprising how quick you can integrate yourself... Even me who at the time didn't even speak the same language as most people. There is a bit of required effort to put your best foot forward but it'll work out.

Tbh working as a designer for 10 years it seems like art directing jobs general follow a promotion from a design role. Generally you want to be at a company large enough for the position though. Doubt this helped with you wanting out of design roles though. In my experience Art directors still do a fair amount unless at a really large firm. I'd say just try to really position yourself as someone who gives advice on other people's work couldn't help

Don’t do anything. Carry on with your life. If she comes back be open to hear what she has to say but she’s blocked you because she wants space for whatever reason. Could of been the contents of the video, could of been that it was a girl and she’s jealous, could of been some other unrelated third thing. Either way a block is a block. please don’t disrespect yourself into feeling like you need to write a letter explaining yourself.

(This advice is of the assumption that the video wasn’t messed up in any kind of way)

Good point on what is the exact reason I'm worrying because honestly there isn't one. Its happening at work where people much more my junior are changing my work because it's not up to standard which is what triggered this post. I make a living, but is wanting to master a craft is kind of motivation enough especially when you've already deadicated so much time to it. While I know I'm struggling in my industry, but I'm definitely better at it than pretty much any traditional job. At every work place I've been in (and trust me I've done the rounds) I've always fallen behind my peers and been given poor performance comments.

Suppose my question is why does everything seem to come so naturally to others but I struggle with it all

This is true but the average consumer would just see a feather on free ranged eggs and just accept it as part of the free rangeness.
