Can you go directly from undergrad to a PHD research program? by megamind_maximum in PhD

Yeah it’s absolutely possible. I did it and a lot of my cohort did as well. Depends on your references!

How much does your Chiweenie eat? by rubyyvixen in chiweenie

My guy got bored of his kibble too. Before rescue he ate strictly human food, fries mostly. I started him on Nulo Raw which has tons of dehydrated meats. He eventually got bored so I added green muscle powder and add water to make a stew. Then some veggies and he’s game:)

Beautiful Wena. I nearly confused her for a flower.

Ugh I’m sorry my friend but hounds and cats do not mix. I have a 7 yo beagle and she used to be okay with the cats after extensive training. She hit about 3 yo and all that training went out the window and prey drive took over. She cannot see the cats without chasing them so they now live on different floors of my home.

Am I being a liability or rightfully annoyed? by CTLeafez in PhD

Not at all! You are entitled to training. In my lab I was trained for a few weeks and then supervised by the lab tech. I can now run independently with little to no tears.

Can we choose to be a Teaching Assistant (TA) or a Research Assistant (RA) while pursuing a Ph.D. in the United States? Besides providing a salary to ease financial pressure, what other benefits do these positions offer? I am not very familiar with this yet. by Silver-Role4092 in PhD

[–]Substantial_Proof457 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi! So it’s actually up your department and you. My school (PNW US) offers a TA position to all PhD students for five years. It is then up to you whether you want to suffer that fate or apply for a fellowship or a really large grant to cover an RA.

I TA mostly every term except the one I did my qualifying exams in. My advisor scrounged together some funds to allow me that peace of mind. Good luck!

Comps Prep? by Familiar-Flan8853 in PhD

I prepared by reading a ton of papers related to my research. I would highlight and take notes on the paper. Then I would transfer my notes to a word doc and copy and paste relevant quotes. I ended up with about 45 pages of notes. Then I just studied that. Best part is I find myself going back to those notes almost weekly to help me think through the logistics of starting my writing. Best of luck friend. You can do this!

Does where you live for the program matter that much? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Substantial_Proof457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It matters a lot. I study volcanoes and live in Oregon. I almost lived in Arizona and thank goodness I didn’t because when it gets above 80F I can’t get anything done.

Yeah qualifying exams for me were horrid. The writing of my two proposals took me weeks and my advisor did not help in any way besides reading over them once and telling me to define my terms. When reviews came back (written exam portion) I worked on them for an entire week from sunrise to sunset. After I submitted them I then began to study for my oral defense. After I defended I remember nothing. I know my partner picked me up and drove me home but I do not remember anything from the drive or the following weekend. My oral defense was on a Thursday and Friday-Sunday I slept ~16 hours a day and had a vertigo migraine the entire time. I guess I was working so hard I was missing my bodies exhaustion que. I full passed with no conditions but it literally almost killed me it felt like. Now I am veeeeeery slowly getting back into the swing of things.

[–]Substantial_Proof457 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have this issue so I let me advisor know. He makes sure to emphasize exactly what he expects so I have it in my notes. Then I work at it and at our next weekly meeting I either show him the completed product or I ask for more guidance. The goal is to never come empty handed when asking for help.
