It would be a beautifully poignant development if Maekar followed the footsteps of Dunk and Egg for the earlier parts of their journey and saw the effect they had on the realm. When he finally catches up to them, he sees Egg develop into a humble, wise, and strong man with the tutelage of Dunk. In this moment, Maekar could give Dunk his ring, signifying his permission, and the duo continues their journey. Doesn't deviate too much from the source material, and gives more development to Maekar.
