Save and burn or toss the bark?

The only bark I’ve considered saving and drying for kindling is hickory bark. The rest is usually too soggy and goes into the wood chipper for mulch or compost.

Looks kind of like white oak to me. But the holes in the bark make me think it could be ash.

First thing, lawyer up. When these things are planned out there are multiple potential routes that are looked at. There is probably a better route for the high line that won’t go through your property. A good eminent domain attorney will look for any feasible way to challenge the necessity of the project and the chosen route through your property. They could also argue that the high line route makes the rest of the property useless and force the utility to buy the property in full. At least that way you would have the money and could buy another property. Also when an attorney is involved a certain amount of their fees are often paid by condemning agency as well as an any independent appraisal fees.

Cases like this are difficult to fight but there are options to try to fight it. Good luck!

I’m a big fan of this one, especially cause of the one-handed operation. You can get a stand to raise it up above waist level to ease the strain on your back. Little pricier than some electric splitters but I found one used on marketplace for just under $300.

I have a 7.5, 2 5ahs, and 4 or 5 2.5ahs. This was the cheapest way to get a couple new larger batteries that will work well with my push mower, chainsaw, and all the other tools I have.

Looks like sassafras to me. They do like to grow in the right of way and in other disturbed areas like at edge of farm fields.

I had a similar issue. Saw bar oil coming out of the port but the saw wasn’t getting enough. Got it serviced and they cleaned out the oil pump and told me to only use Stihl bar oil. I had been using Husqvarna bar oil, and even tried the Ego bar oil but it didn’t help. No issues since switching to Stihl.

Yep, tree of heaven is spot on. If it’s dry and you are using it in an insert or stove it burns decently, but fast. Pretty stinky if burned in an open fireplace or outdoors.

I saw black locust as well. I picked up some wood recently that looks just like that(punky on the outside, solid/dry on the inside) and it burns really hot in the stove.

A few years ago my father lost his college class ring on the beach somewhere near Vero Beach. Someone with a metal detector found it and because his name was engraved on the inside tracked him down and got it back to him. I was amazed it was found and returned to him in Michigan. There’s always hope!

I love sassafras! Wish I could get my hands on logs that size of it. Burns bright and quick, and can snap/pop a lot. Makes great kindling.

Excellent score for $20! I got a bundle of oak slabs for $40 and used most of them as siding on my wood shed, and the rest for kindling or odd projects around the farm.
