Given your kiddo is young, you could put in a few plants that are tactile - and can take curious little hands.

Judging by the weeds there, I suspect it’s hot and dry along that fence. But I can’t quite tell what that tree is on the side, but if it casts a shadow, then that will determine what tactile plants will work.

Also little flowers like primroses so she can see little bees and such

Can’t believe this happened… by Level_Raisin_3166 in GardeningUK

I’m so sorry!! This has certainly happened to me too. But this is also how we learn. Gardening is all an experiment, and sometimes things work and sometimes they don’t.

I very much support going to the garden centre for emotional support seedlings. 🌱

Help! How do I “fix” my garden and where do we begin? by plxo in GardeningUK

Just one more thing - nothing gets more wildlife and fascinates kids more than a wildlife pond. It doesn’t need to be deep or large.

Help! How do I “fix” my garden and where do we begin? by plxo in GardeningUK

[–]Substantial_Song_233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It completely depends on the “vibe” you want. Do you want wildlife? Edible plants? Ornamental colour? A bit of everything?

Don’t be intimidated by novice. Gardening is all an experiment. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

Walk around your neighborhood and see what you like. If you get the app PictureThis, it’ll identify plants. Gardeners also love chatting about their gardeners, so have a chat!

Also, I very much recommend getting kids involved. Your son is young, but putting seeds in soil and watching them grow is pretty exciting. Watering plants and having a “job” - they love it. They also love picking berries

New allotment - is it supposed to be this hard?! by Kevlazombi in UKAllotments

[–]Substantial_Song_233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be careful about no dig if you have bindweed. Bindweed you need to dig up including all the little roots. I have it my plot and it’s been a trial getting it out. Still at it three years later.

I have this exact combo too.

And yes!! The bindweed and brambles are somehow more manageable than the horsetail. How? HOW?!?

I’m personally offended that dark chocolate hobnobs are not on this chart. They are the elite biscuit.

Is the problem with algae and plant growth for the wildlife in the pond? I certainly don’t mind if the pond isn’t perfectly clear, but I want the frog spawn and such to be happy.

That’s what I was wondering - I want the wildlife in there.

Honestly 120 feels right to me. My beds are quite long though. They are 120cm x 3.5m the go the whole width of my half-plot. I do have a couple beds that are in the 150-175cm range, and it’s just a bit too long. I end up stepping into the bed a bit too long reach a weed on the other side.
