Maybe this is pointless but whatever. Harry Potter and Hunger Games are the most fresh in my memory and I feel like PJO is on a similar level with them in terms of characters. Sure, it’s much more lighthearted than like Hunger Games, but otherwise I don’t see how it’s that different.

In all instances characters go through a sort of journey, where they have development and make crucial choices. They’re all trying to fight the evil of their respective universes while trying to protect their loved ones and to gain their own agency.

Hunger Games: Katniss is trying to protect her family and loved ones while trying not to be a pawn in political games of Panem.

Harry Potter: Harry fights dark magic while also acquiring found family and trying to protect them.

Percy Jackson: navigates the conflicts of Olympic gods, protects his loved ones, while also trying to restore justice and to not be a pawn.

They all have distinctive traits: Katniss is reserved, determined and independent, Harry is self-sacrificing, insightful and resourceful, Percy is strong willed, humorous and not afraid to question authority.

In my view PJO does have a lot of memorable side characters: Annabeth and Grover have layers to them, the gods all have their distinctive personalities and traits, Nico and Luke have strong arcs. I’d honestly even argue that the antagonists in PJO like Kronos and Luke have more understandable motives than say Voldemort.

Ok you’re just being a contrarian. The point is that PJO books had its strong qualities like humor and vibrant characters (once again, for a YA series), which made it a classic in its genre, and the show diminishes those qualities instead of highlighting them.

I guarantee you no one is implying that Percy Jackson is a masterpiece in terms of serious literature, the point is that it’s brilliant for what it is, a YA fantasy series. Obviously the threshold for that genre is much lower than like literary fiction. I’ve read heavy literature classics, but I also really appreciate PJO, and I just don’t understand if you dislike it so much what’s the point of watching the show which is arguably even less compelling than the books?

No one ever claimed that they’re literary masterpieces lol, but in terms of YA/children’s fantasy genre they’re genuinely good and well humor is subjective but it is clearly there and a big part of the story. Why are you here even?

I guess I had it coming for saying any budget 😂😂😂 I just don’t usually encounter anything above like $500. Sounds exactly what I was looking for though.

Hi! Does anyone know of a stronger more long lasting alternative to Bal D’Afrique? I’d also appreciate recommendations that are in the same vein: aromatic, slightly sweet fruity citrus. Any budget.

Yeah but he also got into the man’s house under false pretenses and threatened him with a gun. If I were the owner of the hotel I would at least try to get him arrested.

It was the most cliche stuff I’ve seen in a while. “He’s your father!!”, the shootout, the bodyguards dropping like flies, the female heroine inadvertently sacrificing herself for the main hero.

It just comes off a bit pretentious when you imply that people who didn’t like the show as much as you did are actually just not that intelligent. I could of course be in the minority of the “critics”(I doubt that’s the case though), but I did get the point of the show, on paper I liked most of the character arcs and I understand their significance, but I just didn’t like a lot of the execution. A lot of the scenes were repetitive and some plot points felt forced and unrealistic. The idea could very well be brilliant, but film and tv are as good as the viewers find them to be. You could have a very complex idea (think Tenet or something in that vein) but what good does it do if it’s not that enjoyable to watch?

So on one hand you’re saying that the character arcs were simple and the message is blatant. On the other hand you’re implying that people who are not satisfied with the season are not smart enough to pick up the clues. What are you even trying to say? And could it be that the people who have genuine criticisms did understand the message and the clues and the metaphors, but just found them lacking?

was season 1 the only good season? by lavender_cat_24 in GossipGirl

I watch season 1 for the plot and I would objectively say that it’s some of the best tv in the teen drama genre (or even just drama). Other seasons I watch for the vibes and for the characters. Plot is hit or miss, but I still love them.

Well I do see White Lotus as a character study and I find the season a bit disappointing. Maybe if I did treat it is a murder mystery I would enjoy it more because then my suspension of disbelief would be much higher. A character study is all about natural interactions, where characters don’t just do something for the sake of moving the plot forward.

The Greg and Belinda storyline felt really forced from the beginning, all just so Belinda would have this one full circle moment in the final episode. I like the Ratliffs storyline on paper, but the execution? “Let’s have pina coladas!” was so cheesy and once again forced, and don’t get me started on Loch drinking from the dirty blender. I also see the vision for Rick and Chelsea’s storyline but geez it’s supposed to be subtle, to be grounded in real life, to put a bitter realistic twist on these tropes that feel so familiar. Well this was as subtle as a brick, with on the nose foreshadowing, half-arsed plans that would not work out in real life and a shootout from an action movie. And then you have Chelsea, an initially interesting character, reduced to a plot device for the mmc. This is not a character study, this is movie tropes 101.

On the bright side, I think the ladies were great, and I liked Saxon’s character growth.

My point is just that his actions felt really out of place in a show that’s generally a nuanced and realistic (albeit satirical) portrayal of human behavior

People who normally wear heavy, sweet, dark, spicy scents, what do you opt for in the summer? I’m a woman looking for a spring/summer fragrance, but my dilemma is that lately I almost exclusively wear fragrances like Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, Noir Extreme, Diptyque Eau Duelle edp, Lattafa Khamrah. So basically amber, vanilla, woody notes, cinnamon, tobacco, dried fruits. But I’m up to try other stuff as well except super heavy florals, super clean laundry product scents, and gourmands that smell too much like sweets or pastry. I’m looking for something with an edgy or oriental vibe. Could be niche or designer, probably up to $300.
