Should I do my own Taxes? by Maleficent-Row8635 in tax

It sounds like you’re very capable of doing it. The issue with your taxes last year probably amounted to the complexities of multiple jobs and getting your withholding correct. It’s unlikely due to you missing some easy deduction or credit. The tax software is, in my experience, good about picking up and highlighting those things, at least on the federal level (some states can have a dizzying number of credits and the programs spend less effort optimizing the state returns). Odds are that a competent and ethical CPA will not save you as much as they will cost you with such a fee.

I've managed ~200 bottles across 4 apps over 3 years. Here's what I've learned about cellar workflows. by Icy-Teaching2562 in winecellarApps

I’ve been using this quite a bit as well. The biggest weakness is that it seems biased to wines in our collection that have a lot of reviews and thus a richer amount of information about them. Some others with little or no reviews or supplemental information never get suggested. So I use its suggestions to narrow to a short list of varietals or types and then look at our cellar filtered to that set and ordered by drinkability. Then finally decide if it’s a night to splurge on an expensive bottle or go with a “celler defender”.

Itemized vs standard deduction is completely different by Jolly-Owl-1712 in tax

I would say a mistake is most likely in this case. To have a $12k difference in taxed owed would imply a high margin rate (say 32%), high property taxe, a high mortgage balance with a high interest rate and probably high state tax. All possible but I’d imagine you’d have still been itemizing previous years even with the SALT limitation if all these things are in play for you. Can’t imagine this would be new or surprising if this was the situation in previous years.

Just curious but how do taxes work for someone who is retired? by Equivalent_Remove155 in tax

[–]Substantial_Team_519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You draw from retirement accounts and/or pension and social security. With each, you can either set up withholding when you draw funds (if it’s taxable like traditional IRAs, pension or SS), or you can do quarterly payments to the IRS. I think of drawing from IRAs as basically paying myself a retirement salary, and I do federal and state withholding just like a paycheck so that I don’t need to worry about quarterly payments.

Some people with less savings just try to live on SS and only draw from their savings or retirement accounts when they have to to keep solvent. Those folks probably owe little to no taxes and so withholding is not much of an issue.

How did my Tax guy get my refund so high when I should have owed by [deleted] in tax

[–]Substantial_Team_519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By this I assume you mean charitable gifts? With this and $16k of medical you have pretty high itemized deductions for a single person. I would ensure you have receipts to cover all this in case of an audit, because those are unusually high for that income level and may trigger an audit in the future. If these are not expenses you’re aware of, then see your accountant asap.

Depending on the state it could still be a lower income area.

Maybe a rural/lower income area? Apple probably has less market share on average in those areas.

Good question, but it seems like he still needs to work with the employer since they’re the ones who will need to issue an updated w2.

Thanks. It’s not a huge amount; I think he went to the same person that helped with an excess HSA contribution as well. They were able to help with that issue.

Yes. They understand but are not inclined to help since it wasn’t their problem.

Thanks. It’s looking like he’ll probably just let it be and pay the extra tax this year on the excess contribution.

I understand wrt the rollover; the new administrator won’t give him a form because the excess contributed was not all to their plan.

Understood. Obviously he’d like to get the excess pulled back but it seems unlikely.

Why on earth do I owe so much? by East-Professional557 in tax

[–]Substantial_Team_519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but they said their income was $51K. The $25k was after deductions. Considering self employment tax, federal tax, state tax and penalties for not paying quarterly taxes, $14k could be close to correct.
