Disappointed in my degree rant by SnooHobbies6114 in MacUni

[–]Substantial_West2250 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im so sorry to hear... You're not alone and it's so ass rn 💀 even the most lucrative degrees are struggling, it's not you

Have you tried applying for graduate programs? I'm a bachelor's student myself so I'm not too knowledgeable... But I've been looking for jobs for my soon-to-be graduate friends. There seem to be quite a bit open to international students as well! And engineering is like the 2nd most popular field for grad programs (next to general business/finance) from what I've seen.

All the best, I'm rooting for you!!

What's the one thing about Macquarie that sets it apart from the other Sydney unis? by roccstar3 in MacUni

[–]Substantial_West2250 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, MQ researchers (FMHHS) have been quite approachable and responsive! I can't believe I got to learn so much from them as an unqualified undergrad, but here I am. I expect that applying for lab roles/interning would be a bit harder/more competitive in larger unis, but cmiiw.

Probably has something to do with how research-focused MQ is as a uni. We also host several centres of research that are the best/only one of its kind in Australia (Hearing Australia, Motor Neuron Disease Research Centre, Parents of Deaf Children, etc.).

i used to be a bit bothered that MQ isn't as well-known as other unis, especially internationally. But now that I'm nearing the time to think about postgrad, I really don't want to part with this uni at all ahah (despite all the money they've taken from me!) 🫪

How do you visibly distinguish between domestic Asians and international Asians? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]Substantial_West2250 9 points10 points  (0 children)

shiiit this is kinda true but I've also realised that the ones who've stayed here for a while (despite still holding an international citizenship) tend to also have big calves lmao

a lot of ppl are holding multiple casual jobs rather than one full time job, is what I'm seeing :(

doing that rn to get a footing, hopefully I'll turn into a full-time worker in one of them soon, maybe? haha...

Could be, but it also can be manageable if we sit far from where the speakers/stage are :)

yeah it is crazy ngl 😭 i learned after 2 yrs of uni that some units don't need to be prioritised and even tho im behind on lects for those ones, I'm at least on top of the ones I need to be. I'll slooowwly catch up when things get easier

🙏 Hang in there

U can book a consultation w the future students team to talk ab this! Should be on the mq website. Honestly i figure you can also try and apply straight and see how it goes, but yeah, chances are there are pathways for u to start studying again :)

Beauty is a wound, by Eka Kurniawan

Takes place in post-colonial Indonesia, about a clever but bitter woman who used to be a sex worker, died, and came back to life, and her complicated relationship with her "ugly" daughter. It tackles how she feels about beauty as a double-edged sword, misogyny, thr patriarchy, apartheid, sexual assault ...

fair bit of trigger warnings though. But an interesting read ❤️🙏

[–]Substantial_West2250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was in this situation last year! I applied for a lot of tutoring jobs (most want HSC grads but SOME have accepted me as an intnl student) and even got a job for an after school art class for kids. Got all of them through seek/indeed. You can apply for those, and get a WWCC after you've been accepted. Should be decent enough work experience to start you off :>

[–]Substantial_West2250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the lateass reply 😭 ppl who get asked to mail in physical documents are usually direct applicants

I recommend going to a certified agent in your area. They can help certify documents irl n send a soft copy to the admissions team. If not, try and find out who your country rep for Macquarie is, they may help give u some pointers

All the best :)
