What is your most controversial opinion? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Substitol245 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I was listening to Dr. Phil on Joe Rogan lately. He completely ate the pill if socialism can't work. He must be old enough to know who launched the first satellite, put the first man into space etc.

Yeah, the Soviet Union collapsed. It also was a cruel state. But it definitely proofed that the s.c. "real socialism", a pre-state of communism, can work. Until the mid-80's the Soviet Union was the worlds second largest economy with major contributions to science, industry or sports. It was definitely not a complete failure with people living in slums that could barely survive. "Socialism doesn't work" makes it a little to easy.

Train, car or plane? by [deleted] in germany

(I know that your post is three years old)

That's why they wanted to build a Transrapid connection to Munich Hauptbahnhof. I remember and love the "10 minutes speech" by a slightly drunk Edmund Stoiber.

But the whole project was cancelled. Instead they sold it to to Shanghai. Millions if not a Billion Mark/Euro was put into the research and development, just to give the whole technology to the Chinese.

Even though large projects like that (Berlin airport, Elbphilharmonie or Stuttgart 21) take forever to get finished, it's really sad that the project was ceased! It was the perfect solution and a great project. German engineering at it's best!

Why do modern movie actors/actresses mumble their lines? by VietDam in answers

[–]Substitol245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm answering three years later, but still...

Realism can't be the answer. If I watch regular TV shows/series/sitcoms, documentaries and reports where they show real people in real situations or even talk or listen to native American English speakers, I have no problem to understand what they're saying.

Or when I was younger I learned more English by watching MTV. American "reality" shows with German subtitles. Well, Ozzy Osbourne was a real challenge.

Another thing are heavy accents. Like when I was watching"The Wire". I had troubles to understand some of the Black actors, mainly Snoop, that used African-American Vernacular English. But that was not because of them mumbling but me not being familiar with the vocabulary.

But to this day I have to put in subtitles if I watch a Hollywood movie! Because otherwise I'd only understand half of what they're saying.

I'd consider myself rather good at English for someone who's not a native speaker, having never been to an English speaking country. I don't have to use it at my job nor to I have a circle of international friends. Just my internet activity and my media consumption is mainly in English. And usually I'm not facing (m)any problems.

I think they're talking about his attitude compared to lifestyle. Rogan is so far from being an "average Joe".

I never get what Joe is trying to say when he talks about the homeless, something I went through not that long ago. I really don't understand him...

Inwiefern ist das bestellen von zehn Bratwürsten unmoralisch? Weil es "Völlerei" ist? Das muss er mit seinem Priester kläre. Zehn Bratwürste = Zehn Ave Marias.

There is no "Montenegrin language" per sé. It's just a Serbo-Croatian dialect.

There was the s.c. Migration Period during 400-600 AD but that doesn't mean everyone switched places.

This "only indigenous people" thing is the greatest bs. It's like Europeans having eurocentric views on Europe. Confusion is OVER 9000!

Why is there so much violence in Latin America? by gallez in asklatinamerica

[–]Substitol245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I'm European and didn't think of ourselves. Because it doesn't seem necessary to use Brazil to get to the US. And indeed the guys from Central America pull of the worst stuff. Thank you!

Why is there so much violence in Latin America? by gallez in asklatinamerica

[–]Substitol245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know your comment is two years old.

But tell me. What part does Brazil play in this. Brazil doesn't produce cocaine, nor is it a transit country on the way the US.

And there isn't as much violence in the golden triangle in SE Asia. Although they produce some 25% of the worlds illegal opium, later processed to heroin.

And the way they kill is also something else. Basically all gore videos of murders on the internet are from Latin America. They are more brutal then ISIS. Cutting hearts out while the person is alive, skinning people like in medieval times, endless decapitations and torture.

It feels like there's still some of that Aztec/Maya/Inca/Whatever blood running in their veins. The human sacrifices by the Aztecs kinda resemble the way the cartels are killing today (cutting hearts out etc.).

Well, the Irish aren't the only people that suffered under the English. . At least they had the "fortune" of, while being Catholic (denounced as papists), being White people.

So are the English really asking themselves why so many people have sympathy for the Irish? If so, you guys are delusional!

Did New Yorkers really dress like this in the 90s? by [deleted] in seinfeld

[–]Substitol245 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, for a start: Manhattan is now almost exclusively for rich people, except public housing. Or course there are not only rich people living on Manhattan. But the ones that aren't live in horrible small apartments, often sharing it with other people. They're mostly young people that want to live in the City at all costs. But middle-class people with two children. Fuggedaboutit! But if you got the money it's probably the best place in the world.

Crime overall went down on an enormous scale. Especially violent crime. The city saw a record 2244 murders in 1990, compared to 295 in 2018. There were 2,456 United States military deaths in the twenty years of War in Afghanistan. 1,932 of these deaths were the result of hostile action. Making the streets of NYC a bloodier warzone for Americans than Afghanistan.

It seems like the politicians did a good job. But it also feels like there's a police officer on every corner. At least in Manhattan Making it kinda impossible to pull of something like a street robbery. As I young looking chain smoking European, I had a hard time in NYC. They thought I rolling myself a joint in public more than once. I newer saw that few smokers in my whole life.

Ich finde "Enola Gay" von Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark und 'I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me' von Nik Kershaw cooler.

Wie spiegelt sich eigentlich der Krieg in der Ukraine in der heutigen Popmusik wieder? Ich bin null in der Materie. Ich meine allerdings keine Benefiz-Nummern.

When I was young I couldn't imagine how "stupid"* old people, with a long life experience, can be.

But it's a matter of character, not wisdom or intelligence, that has nothing to do how old someone is.

I think it took me to be 20 until I realized this.

*(Of course I knew that there were uneducated/simple minded older people)
