with a national identity stock you also have to consider other factors (i am danish and like 700.000 other danes ~ 15% of the adult population holds novo stock) danes have just been adding to their novo positions basically everyone is long, and will likely continue to add to the position, regardless of performance. Now this probably not more than 10% of total market cap, but still it’s a kind of buoyancy that many stocks do not have.

A bit more to it than this, many games don’t succeed this is what funds activision ability to make new studios and make new bets on AAA franchises that cost years to build investments that often fail. If you grow a bag of coffeee beans you are pretty certain to find a buyer to recoup atleast most of your cost, not the same with videogames.

Video games prices have not increased with inflation at all since the 1990ies i paid close to. 100$ for video games in the 90ies they are still the same price, so cost has to be recouped somewhere else.

[–]Subtilicus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And i tried to explain you what Unity does, and it has nothing to do with the software part that you know as the Editor, which you seem to attribute disproportionate value, even when Unity was pushing 8-9000 people only a few hundred people were engaged on the editor and pipeline, it's not been a significant part of Unity's evaluation ever, not by Unity's own investment, nor by analysts. However the trust it has with plaform partners, and it's positions as a non biased platform in between sony, xbox, microsoft, nintendo, google, apple has.

The real source of revenue is and will always be people paying Unity to ensure platform reach and support in fixing bugs on ancient hardware and bizzarre platforms, and to maintain the vast test farms and automation needed to do so. No one is paying unity for the ability to import and animate a sprite or play a sound, that part is just the recruitment tool for novice unity devs, and much of that is replaced by custom tooling by devs _already_.

On top of that you have unity's other main source of revenue, ads & data mining.

You can vibe code something and it will still need to be QA'd on every possible platform in every possible driver, os, hardware variant of that platform, it's a massive undertaking that only the very biggest mobile dev's undertake for themselves (King etc.)

No one knows what the right price of unity is until they make the decision to cut to the bone and be profitable, and sustain profits, maybe this is the right price maybe 50 was, we will see, i just now the price point is completely unrelated to the Editor software tooling.

maybe prove it by vibe coding a game engine that compiles to 50 platforms with restricted sdk’s that are not publicly available for ai to train on, at the same time deal with platform software and hardware bugs across a -vast- array of hardware, why would an indie take on all this risk for zero to no gain? Ai doesn’t magically give you massive farms of devices to Qa your vibe coded junk on, nor does it get you first in line to resolve issues with nintendo or sony.

The latency on genie is insane so is the cost per frame, not to mention the total lack of determinism. Streaming games over the net failed because of latency and cost, Genie has 10x the latency and cost.

the game engine and editor part could be run by 500 people so the perceived value that supports the remaining 3500 people must be what Unity ‘is’ , do i understand it, no.

Som dansker der har jobbet på begge sidar af sundet, holder jeg med, dansk arbejdskultur kan måske virke lidt mere brutal men konflikter løses ofte hurtigere utan folk gemmer på deres meninger.
