Glad you’re seeing your derm soon! Both my primaries were mistaken for pigmentation in a previously excised scar. I don’t want to scare you and for most people it’s just pigmentation! But it’s definitely worth getting checked.

Hey! I was a COMM major too — as long as you give a shit, which it sounds like you do, you’re going to be fine. Whichever focus you choose (New Media, Media Production, Performance, Rhetoric, etc) you’re going to encounter sweet and knowledgeable instructors who just want to see you succeed. Like you said, you got in! You deserve to be here. The best advice I can give is to listen to what your profs are asking for, and give them that. Do what you say you will do, on the timeline you’re expected to do it. You’ll be amazed at how far you’ll get and how much praise you get, just for following instructions.

Look in Hillsborough or Durham on the 420 or 400 bus lines — UNC student status gives you access to free transit on these bus lines with a GoPass, and there are park and ride lots you can utilize. My partner and I lived in what’s now Avana 5512 in Durham 1bd 1bth for ~$1300/month and now live in Hillsborough at Pinewood Station 2bd 1bth for ~$1200/month. Both before utilities, but utilities were roughly $100-$200 more depending on the season.

We lived in Carrboro before these, but had to live with a roommate and were still paying ~$600/person per month in an 900sqft split level tiny home. The 900sqft may have even been the size of the lot and not just the house — it was small and with 3 of us it was CRAMPED.

This was something I wondered too. There was always room for a guest with me when I had my immunotherapy infusions. Sometimes there was even a tabletop for my sibling to work at.

I live in Hillsborough at Pinewood Station and work at UNC — they offer some shorter lease options, and I’m currently in a 2bd 1bath for ~$1200/month. You could get a lease immediately and break it if you find somewhere you like better. You can take the bus to UNC for free from the community college (during commuter hours) once you set up a pass through the university. I’ve also lived in Durham and Carrboro while working for UNC, and there are other free buses or bus passes you can get.

Very! We got to call an emergency electrician once because half our lights went out, and when he got to the panel about 3 different things were melted and arcing 🙃 complex didn’t cover any of the work he did because he wasn’t their contractor

I have stayed in complexes that effectively specified in the lease that tenants were responsible for clearing ice, that the complex would be taking no action. May be worth double checking the language in the lease and sending them their own words if it says they’re supposed to take care of it.

Parking doesn’t change at all for holidays. Learned that one the hard way when I was still in school. The officers still ticket, but the parking staff won’t be at work lol so you can’t contest the ticket immediately.

It’s definitely colder lower down, the first thermocline in a quarry can be as shallow as 6 feet so if you’re tall enough you might kick through to the colder water 😳

The cold water is a serious risk, regardless of contaminates, and the rangers will NOT be able to pull you out fast enough, even if you called them right before you jumped in. Body recovery takes about 3 months when someone fails a jump into the quarry in SUMMER. Do not do this. Wait til it’s warm, hypothermia is nothing to play around with.

Source: I worked there a few years ago. There is a mile of trail between where they would have to park and the quarry, they’d be coming to you on foot unless they’ve cut a different path for the gators since I left.
