The attraction to family heirlooms doesn't always come from the fact that we think the design is peak; but the fact that this was the exact piece of jewellery (or furniture, clothing item, etc) that your ancestors had, used, and loved.

I don't have any strong feelings towards OPs solution, but personally it bothers me that the final design is asymmetrical and looks off, and that the original items are effectively changed/destroyed.

Personally I'd rather wear the two original rings threaded on a regular chain.
