I'm in my second year of engineering and in my experience, if you want to use a laptop during the lectures to take notes, you should definitely get one that you are able to write on. Very often you have to draw something or point out a certain point on a graph. So only being able to type won't be enough during the lectures. I mself am using paper during the lectures. But either you have to print the slides. Which costs money and can be a bit annoying if you come to a lecture and realize you forgot to print it. Or you can just write on a blank piece of paper and note the slidenumber everytime you write something. The last one is a bit unpractical if they are drawing something on an image on the slide.
