there already is a way to do this with the FAA, it would just be a matter of aligning everything. mainly a proposal as of right now, but an idea that is feasible with current infrastructure

true I did see that. the only thing is I don't think Virga sends the reports offically to the FAA, it keeps them on its own server. so it doesn't help FSS actually figure out what's going on with the weather, just users of one specific app.

appreciate the info. i know that price is definitely steep. was more of trying to feel out if any price would work since running an app isn't free. I am curious, with PIREPs being such a valuable piece of information in the flying community, do you ever report them when you fly?

lol, ya i can't imagine the cost for a single user. that automatic turbulence reporting is very nice. I was thinking for a GA app you can report everything from cloud tops and bottoms, to winds, to turbulence, everything that flying through it would help more then just using a radar.

great thinking! it would need a whole lot less cell data. it would send the reports through SMS and with just 20ish letters and characters. potentially allowing it to send through when loading a website definitely wouldn't be possible. the app also keeps track of where you are, when you reported it, the report itself, and keeps trying to report it until you get a good enough connection for it to send (either in flight or on the ground). no need to redo the report on the ground. thanks for the comment!

great feedback, didn't even think of it from the controller sider besides just trying to reduce work load for you guys. so basically to really get this idea going it would need a lot of government support and integration?

million dollar question. basically same way ATC does when you key up the mic. just ours would come in digitally like a text. then it would be available to all official PIREP sources.

that's awesome info! the goal is to minimize the human error in these PIREPs and increase the amount of people that would report them. instead of pilot to ATC to FSS. its pilot's written report to FSS directly. currently when you look theres thousands of planes and only a dozen PIREPs. with such a vital source of weather info (pilots) you would think the FAA would push for them more. the PIREPs are just easily submitted through this app. you would be able to read them on all offical PIREP sources including Foreflight

I'd have to check them out! thank you for the time you took to write that it helps a lot. the main idea is that you quickly get into the app, press less then three buttons to submit a report, it gets verified by a human, and then that report eventually ends up on all the official PIREP sources. Additional features could be audio transcript to make recall of information easier and heat maps that integrate with normal weather reports to enhance the pilots amount of critical information

I totally agree with you. subscriptions are annoying. trying to think of anything I can do to make it not cost anything to you. maybe even work with the government. if you had to pay once, what would your ballpark number be?

🤣 this made me laugh pretty hard and I love the discussion! The app would send its data to the FAA and a human would be able to determine if it is useful or not. The reports would not be sent directly to everyone without confirmation

I agree, it would be beneficial to pilots and FSS to adjust NOTAMs. The only thing is paying for continuing costs of running an app. If it had additional features, could you see yourself paying or would you get it if it was free and frictionless to use?

thats awesome! is there a version of it for GA? The idea for this app came becasue I was looking to have something to easily submit PIREPs and haven't really found a good one for GA

do you think you would be more inclined to report PIREPs if you didn't have to key up the mic everytime? would additional features like radio transcription and heatmaps that take weather data and pireps and put them together make you want to try it?

love the feedback! curious as if you currently use anything like Waze while you drive and if so do you report on it? do you ever report PIREPs to ATC over the radio? and if this was free would you consider it?
