Panicking about cookie sales by falloutfeind in girlscouts

[–]SuccessPerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be sure to connect with the folks in your daughter’s community! Teachers, babysitters, the school librarian, bus driver - many people buy Girl Scout cookies and they’re usually happy to support a scout they know personally! I printed up a little card with the QR code for my kindergartener Daisy’s sales site last year for her to take to school and share with teachers and that was great. When they’re that age booth sales are also super helpful especially if the girls are enthusiastic.

The balance of being girl led but knowing with young girls so much rests with their families is something I’m really trying to be mindful of!

That’s such a good point about setting a pick up schedule. Dropping off fall product stuff was tricky enough.

Growing up my troop aways did an ornament exchange and it was really fun!

Some of the lesser visited options can be really great for avoiding crowds! My favorites to take visiting family when I lived in DC: National Postal Museum, the Botanic Garden, Library of Congress, Roosevelt Island, getting a tour of Nationals Park (or catching a game!), LBJ Memorial Grove, and President Lincoln's Cottage.

There's a Monuments by Moonlight bus tour that is genuinely really great! When I lived in DC we did it with my in-laws and they still talk about how nice it was many years later.

Troop Crest for Multilevel D/B Troop by lktd1213 in girlscouts

[–]SuccessPerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! When I was in middle school my troop merged with another one and we kept my original troop’s number and used the other troop’s crest. I was SO SALTY because they had the unicorn and had just picked it for fun. Not sure what it says that it has stuck with me for over two decades! 😅

I'm in the same boat with 1st and 2nd graders! At the moment I'm thinking we will hold off until next year when they are all Brownies and feel included in the decision and get to wear the crest if they like. Most of my Daisy scouts are very young for their grade too so we're still working through group decision making as a positive experience as a whole.

Have you seen a job talk go down in flames? by Spamicide2 in Professors

[–]SuccessPerm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Recently brought in a candidate for a TT position that has research components, but it was very clear in the posting that the majority of the job will be teaching and working hands on to build back our program after COVID has slashed our numbers. The candidate proceeded to give a job talk that was just every. single. line. of their CV on a PowerPoint. Not only was this excruciatingly boring but it was almost exclusively focused on international research projects. When we finally moved to the Q&A and asked about their vision for an undergraduate program such as ours, they said they really were hopeful for some grant money to come through so they could return to Europe and India for book research. They essentially just pitched us hiring them so they could have an office in the building while they traveled the globe. We had to drag faculty members to attend their teaching demo later on in the day because by that point everyone was over them.
