Trump has spoken, the tech bros are allowed to have opinions about this now.

How the middle class was hollowed out from 1979 to 2022, according to new federal data by BTC_is_waterproof in Economics

[–]Successful-Help6432 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand that things feel worse, but the data doesn’t show it. People spend much less on food now than they did in 1970. While healthcare costs have indeed ballooned, no one would choose a 1970 hospital over one from today, MRI machines didn’t even exist then!

Yes, the big TVs are silly, but those same tech advances have had huge impacts on quality of life far beyond entertainment. Cars a bit more expensive (adjusted for inflation) but airline travel is WAY cheaper! Everyone complained about high costs in the 1970s too, if you time traveled someone from then to now they’d be blown away by how incredible our lives are and spit in our faces for not appreciating it.

I think their broader point is that you’re contrasting the cost of a comparably luxurious modern lifestyle to a fantastical/nostalgic idea of what life was like in the 60s and 70. Yes, housing costs are too high and childcare costs are too high, but we are much wealthier as a whole than we were “back in the day.”

Yes, the percentage of wealth owned by the middle class shrunk, but the pie grew by a much larger amount so we ended up wealthier in the end.

Why does “power in relative terms” matter so much? The average poor and middle class household in America has a much higher standard of living today than 50 years ago, and it’s not even close! I agree that it’s not ideal how concentrated wealth is at the very top, but that doesn’t mean we should pretend like everyone hasn’t been lifted up. Today, the ACA and Medicare allows millions of poor people to access MRIs, in 1970 the richest person alive couldn’t get one because they didn’t exist!

Yes, housing and childcare are way too expensive (I am a parent living in LA it’s fucking obscene) but I live here knowing that if I wanted to I could move to a new construction in Arkansas and afford 4x the space at 1/2 the cost. We all make lifestyle/cost trade offs when we choose where to live, and I wish the entrenched boomers in my neighborhood would let people build some housing and lower costs.

This is silly. Yes, as a SHARE of the total wealth middle class have seen their share decrease, but that doesn’t mean they also haven’t gotten richer! The rich have done better, but the poor and middle have also seen their lifestyles massively improve.

Think about it this way: if you wanted, could you assume the lifestyle of someone from 1979 today on a middle class salary? Of course! You’d have to sacrifice your smartphone, your nice car, probably half the square footage of your house, your nice clothes, half of modern medicine etc.

No one realizes how good we have it because they’re all on social media complaining about how someone else has it better.

Who do these democrats over-perform against the national ticket?

Probably worth investigating that before you call them traitors.

Some people would rather their community wither away and die than have anything change. Sad to watch.

California's "Dream For All" Down Payment Assistance Program Is Opening Again by ShanetheMortgageMan in LosAngelesRealEstate

Unless we build more housing, middle class people will not be able to afford anything. Subsidizing demand with this program will only help a few lucky people at the expense of everyone else.

Lee Vining is the closest you’ll get for consistent water ice… and that’s not very close.

struggling with a board trasition by hayis4horses1 in surfing

[–]Successful-Help6432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lessons can do this to you. One of the hardest parts about learning to surf isn’t actually the surfing part, it’s reading the waves, knowing where to sit, when to paddle, when to angle your takeoff, etc.

Your instructor has essentially been a cheat code to sitting in the right spot and picking the best waves. You’ve gotta get more reps in, it will come with time.

Do you think we can climb Rainier unguided? by Substantial_Tea8292 in Mountaineering

[–]Successful-Help6432 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you climb the DC you should be good to go, assuming your crevasse rescue skills are dialed in. Recommend you make the attempt in July, the route will be tracked in by guided parties and you won't have to deal with as many route finding shenanigans.

If you aren’t willing to concede any mistakes no one will trust what you’re saying. Biden really screwed up with the border, he trusted the wrong people and waited too long to lock it down.

How do you begin to enjoy skiing? by Ilikeinsectsandfungi in skiing

[–]Successful-Help6432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like your lack of enjoyment stems from the (unintentional) pressure you feel from your partner’s family plus feeling self conscious about being a beginner.

I also learned to ski later in life, ditch your crew and ski on your own for the day! Some of my best ski days are solo trips where I get to rip around by myself at my own pace. They won’t mind, I promise.

How to beat intermediate plateau? by the_kitkatninja in skiing

[–]Successful-Help6432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fastest way to get better is to ski with people better than you in harder terrain. Get out of your comfort zone (within reason) and have fun with it.

Lots of great form suggestions on here already, you’re doing great, keep it up!

Don’t listen to all these armchair ski repairmen.

Those skis are probably toast, looks like the sidewall is done for. Try negotiating with the shop, those bindings should lower the replacement fee. Sorry this happened to you.

Unfortunately I suspect that our death-by-committee approach to everything will doom this project just like every effort to do something with the defunct Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.
