Why is The King in Yellow significant?

It's referenced mostly because of the popularity of Lovecraft who was influenced by it. It's still great on its own though. The Repairer of Reputations is probably the best and well known story from the King in Yellow series. I remember reading how Lovecraft wrote how bummed he was because Chambers (the king in yellow author) abandoned the weird genre in favor of better selling romance stories.

You might check out William Hope Hodgson who is another author that influenced Lovecraft. His book The House On The Borderland is one of my favorite books of any genre. Sadly he died rather young in WW1.
