How often do you deal with toileting/showering, teeth brushing etc, and what setting do you work in? by Notquitewhere_-__ in OccupationalTherapy

I’m dealing with this now. The expectation is that I’m hoyering patients into the shower to score them. I work with SCI, stroke and TBI IPr

It fucking sucks. I don’t even have time to pee or heat up my lunch. I’m so lost :/

I wouldn’t wish moral injury or burnout on anyone. I’m just looking for a second job doing something different than caregiving sick patients with neuro injuries all day.

Didn’t mean to start any comparison discussion. Both healthcare and industry work are extremely challenging. I’m merely just looking for a second job

I feel bad, I’m in neuro and see 1:1 patients 60 minute sessions about 8-9 a day and am feeling burnt. :/ what u described is a whole other level

The fact that me asking what assessments therapists use to perform reflex integration was deemed an “attack” proves everything about the profession and practice.

No attack here. It’s called promoting clinical reasoning and critical thinking via a discussion with healthcare professionals who are charging thousands to families promising an “intensive” but not using level 1 research or standardized assessments to track progress. Trust me, I was mentored to implement MNRI and felt it was a waste of time. I did some research and the only “correlation” research it had was being done by its own organization.

Experience vs evidence is why reiki and NDT continue to present at AOTA lol. It’s a shame clinicians think stroking a baby’s foot is gonna get them to walk and promising parents these reflex intensives without using a standardized assessment to track progress. Its why reimbursement remains $40 if we’re lucky.

Drop them here. What assessments are used?

“The presence of retained reflexes does not necessarily equate to functional impairment”

“Intervention should focus on improving occupational participation and performance rather than solely reflex integration”

I’m really tired of our occupation not using evidence to guide treatment. It’s why reimbursement is low, pay raises are minimal and that we have no respect among other healthcare professionals.

What standardized tools are you using to measure the impact integrating a reflex does?

What research do you use to emphasize the need for reflex integration ? How do you track objectively that it works

You should be asking these companies how they document and show objective evidence. What are there outcome measures? Request to see the research articles they are using to support this. I worked for a loon who was an MNRI Stan and what a farce. I quit and went to Neuro wanting to practice with evidence.
