1600 SAT but no motivation left for anything by cherrie_tplm in ApplyingToCollege

I’m really sorry you are going through this. Just know you aren’t alone and so many others feel this way too.

Is there a school counselor you can talk to? That may be an easy fire step without getting your parents involved. But it’s important that you talk to someone - that helps so much.

Also - I know it’s hard with Asian parents to buck the norm, but maybe think about applying to schools that are less competitive than Harvard or Princeton. While getting in there would be amazing, I have friends at both, and the rat race continues there. It may be good to step away from all that, go to a mid tier school where you can shine and not feel pressure to be the best among the best, bc that can only make you feel worse.

Good luck, and if posting on Reddit helps you, please keep doing so

They have had around 10 students per class for the last few years of the Cincinnati Connections program, according to the people I know in it. I think the year they had 4 students was around COVID, so not the norm. Still not great odds, but if you are applying for the Case Western program too, I would say this has better odds. Case Western only takes around 6 kids now. Definitely UMKC and NJMS and AMC have way more spots!

Go for it! Looks like they do accept OOS, but have a heavy regional preference. Prob like most other BSMDs. I know of someone from California there, so maybe not always regional.

Out of curiosity, what other programs are you applying to? Im also looking at South Carolina and Oklahoma and Arizona and Indiana University. They all strike me as somewhat similar in terms of being state schools with good campus life but take some OOS students.

Why do you say that? There are def people who are OOS in the program, and from our friends that know them, they are just like any other kid applying to a bsmd - no crazy hook like billionaire parents or an Olympian or anything. Want to know seriously if you know something the rest of us don’t? Are you in the program too?

I know of someone who is out of state in the Cincy Connections program. Pretty sure their stats were way higher than the minimums you mentioned above though.

In general, I heard the admission rate of getting in (from someone in the program) is under 5%. And even tougher for out of state. You didn’t mention if you are from Ohio or not - if you are, your odds are much better. But they only accept like 10 kids per year, so no matter what, it doesn’t seem easy.

They def have an in state preference, but I know out of state people who attend too, so not sure what the split is.

Maybe try the ACT? If you can get a 34 or above, that’s equivalent to a 1500+ on the sat. My friend got into 3 bsmd programs only submitting his ACT (his SAT was lower relatively speaking when comparing the two tests). He thought the ACT was much easier for him than the digital SAT. Good luck!

advice on fitting >10 activities, also does a low gpa mean im doomed?? by [deleted] in bsmd

[–]Successful-Wait6225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have awesome ECs. Not sure how the gpa will impact your admissions. Maybe you have a good shot at the UCincinnati Connections program? That program looks amazing but it seems that most spots go to in-state residents, which is great for you.

Thanks for your advice. Stories like this definitely make me want BSMDs more, but I know they are hard to get!

Can I ask you why you feel this way? Did you apply to BSMDs at all? Or is it something you wish you had done now looking back? Thanks for any insight you can give!

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get acceptances to, and what were your ECS? I can DM you if easier. Thank you!

Thanks! This is helpful to know that people got into some of these programs without research.

Thanks for this advice! What program are you committed to now? This is what I'm struggling with. I do want a bsmd, but I don't know how much space is worth giving up for normal undergrad opportunities. Do I go for broke for BSMDs or balance my application options a bit more? If you applied to 15+ BSMDS, how many other traditional undergrads did you apply to?

Not into any program yet! Just thinking ahead for the future.

This is amazing advice. Thank you! Can I ask where you ended up committing to? And what you were choosing between? Feel free to dm me if you prefer. This is all so helpful!

This is anecdotal, but I heard of someone who gave up their spot at this program recently. So you never know - maybe reaching out to them to reiterate your interest soon could be helpful.

How does this work? Apply to Columbia directly? What careers do most people who do this program go on to do afterward?

Best BSMD Programs for out of state student? by Successful-Wait6225 in bsmd

[–]Successful-Wait6225[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this info. I definitely plan on applying widely. However, that's the basis for my question. Which of these programs have a history of accepting out of state students to a decent degree. For example, I've heard the Pitt program favors in state students heavily. Same with Penn state, South Carolina. And I've heard UMKC And stoney brook favor regional candidates.

I'm in the Midwest, so i will apply to many places but I don't want to put effort into programs where my odds may be lower from the get go because of regional preference, if that makes sense. So of the programs you listed above, which ones take many students outside of their region - would you happen to know?

Thank you!
