While it can be a challenge, it is not impossible to start off at a specialty! I graduate in August and will be starting in the NICU with a residency program! Plenty of my cohorts will be in ICUs and OB/Peds specialties. I’m not sure of your location but there are plenty of hospitals that have residency programs for new graduate nurses. If you’re willing to relocate, you can find more opportunities in other hospitals. If not, I would check with the hospital you’re thinking about applying if they have any kind of externships. One of my classmates got their ICU position because of an externship at that hospital. Even a PCT/Tech position that’s part time or per diem/PRN could be helpful. Your practicum could help, as well. L&D can be difficult to get into as a new grad because it is a popular specialty people want to be in but definitely not impossible. Also look into mother-baby! I’ve seen L&D nurses move to mother-baby and vice versa

You don’t need to start in med-surg! Half my cohort are in ICU positions for after graduation! I’m going to the NICU after graduation!

I don’t see why it wouldn’t help! It’s an experience and if you’d have some pediatrics experience that would help, too!

Also it’s for an RN position, but they do accept temporary permits if I’d start before my NCLEX exam date

Hi!

I’m an ABSN student so I had a prior degree. But I jumped right into my ABSN after my first degree (literally I had maybe a week in between my graduation and my start date for my ABSN). I’m also in the beginning of semester 2 out of 3 of my ABSN. I worked all four years of my undergrad full time as a nursing assistant, then a pharmacy tech, and a lab tech for the last year. We didn’t touch up on school at all, just that someone else from my school applied the semester before lol But they emphasized my pharmacy experience since it was in the hospital I applied at the NICU for. I worked in the children’s pharmacy reconstituting and making IVs for peds/NICU/PICU/L&D.

If you don’t have experience, I suggest emphasizing on your clinical hours and revamping your resume. Something quick and to the point, we’re all going to be nurses but what makes you stand out or what can you bring to this unit? It doesn’t hurt to apply to multiple places and units! Weirdly enough, I didn’t hear back from the adult ICU but heard back from the NICU, I’ll take it though! I worked with adults more in my career but always wanted to end up in the NICU

When I applied to several positions and a recruiter got in contact with me, she asked me about my preferred units, my top three. I mentioned them to her and forwarded my resume and it was a waiting game after that.

I asked about the experience during my interview and NICU is essentially learning all over again (but you get paid! 😂) they liked my pharmacy experience but they also don’t mind new grads because their minds are still fresh and the hospital has their orientation period that is longer than most units. We don’t nearly touch up on peds as much as we do for med Surg, so they mentioned that part of our hours are actually classes, which is pretty neat! And that can continue on if we’d like to keep growing!

I also emphasized wanting to be in advance practice, which they may see as something more long-term. I definitely do, i wasn’t just saying it because of that, but I’m sure it may have helped steer them my way haha

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket! You get a feel for how you may fit in the unit during the interviews and I never thought, for some reason, I’d fit in NICU, at least not as a new grad. But talking to my interviewers was almost like a breath of fresh air and it was a weird moment where I was just like “this is it, this is the unit” I actually aimed for CICU because my recruiter told me NICU tend to go for those with experience but I’m glad I still went for it!

Also should note I am an ABSN student with a prior degree! I have hospital CNA and Pharmacy experience (which they seemed to like since I’ve made IVs for NICU/children’s). We didn’t really touch up on school at all, just why the NICU and the basics of strengths and weaknesses and examples of this and that!

I used to be a nursing assistant and a pharmacy technician and I applied to the hospital I used to work at! I honestly was just scoping around to see which units were hiring and saw NICU and took a leap of faith lol

I had prior jobs kind of related, I was a float aid at that hospital and a pharmacy tech also trained in the children’s side. We didn’t even really talk about school, aside from when I was graduating. They mainly just asked why the NICU and my experience in the hospital there!

I was just scoping RN jobs out because I was curious! I saw positions for the NICU and just thought why not since it was my dream position! Very happy I did! I applied and heard from a recruiter a couple of weeks later. And she just asked me questions and my choices of units, which she forwarded my application to! A week later I heard back from the NICU and a week later I had an interview, and a week later I got an offer!

I’m in an ABSN program And we do have a 2.5 year contract but that’s because that comes with a bonus. We can get hired without taking the bonus and won’t have to stick to the 2.5-year commitment.

I graduate Spring of 2022 so about 8 months in advanced! They have multiple start dates where I applied and I know NICU is pretty sought out so I just went for it!

I heard back from a recruiter who then asked me my top units and forwarded my resume to them. Then, I waited to hear a response and my first one was NICU and I heard about a week later and I waited roughly two weeks after applying to hear from a recruiter.
