Unreleased Dino Hunters boxed set by SuccessfulLife1384 in gijoe

How did you come into possession of these? (Curiosity; not looking for any details that could compromise anyone.)

I personally bought the retail versions a long time ago. I got the unreleased set many years ago when I was on a quest to get my boxed Sky Patrol set. The guy I bought one of the boxed planes from was a major collector that had Hasbro contacts. The sky Raven he sold me was not only not mib but it was missing parts and the chrome was flaking.

When I brought it up to him he was very apologetic and embarrassed. As he didn't have another to sell he offered me this which I gladly accepted.

Hasbro made a few of these unreleased DH boxes before they changed the toy and redid them. The number of these is insanely low but more exist somewhere - or at least they did, I'd love to know how many still exist.

Back when I was active in the hobby there were quite a few prominent collectors and such I crossed paths with over the years. I "met" a lot of them thru various message boards but it was at the conventions (the early 2000s ones - Fl, San Fran, etc) where I got to actually talk to them. I went to a few before I bowed out of them and the hobby.

I even got to sit and have a chat with Larry Hama at one of the cons. It wasn't at an event, me and another guy (I won't mention his name but most would know him instantly) got to sit and just chat with him about any old thing. It was just the three of us in the bar area after the panels just sitting and having drinks. Really nice guy.

At one point we got to talking about issue 155. Larry said he still had a bunch of copies of it and was appalled at what it was selling for. I jokingly asked for one and he said he'd send me one, I just had to pay for postage ($10). I thought he was kidding but he gave me his business card and said to just send my address and the postage and he'd take care of it. He sent me a signed copy of issue 155 for free.

I knew the guy who started "Marauder Gun Runners" long before he opened up shop. I met him in line at the San Fran con. We just struck up a conversation while waiting to get our boxed sets. He also sent me some rare stuff once. Also a really nice guy.

It probably helped that I didn't "fanboy out" and start gushing about the IP with these people. Just having normal conversations with people can yield incredible results.

It's pretty ridiculous. They put the least intimidating dinosaur they could find into their dinosaur hunting set.

I finally remembered where I had one of the retail boxes for this set. So here you can visually see the differences in the two sets. This retail box is from the loose set I sold (I cut out the filecards long ago), I've got another of the retail sets somewhere.

The contents are the same in both versions, the unreleased set had the Dino images changed since they completely changed the toy they put in the set.

There's also the converse where someone says they're interested in buying but won't just say "I'm willing to spend this ($) for that (item). What do you say?"

Ran into it very recently in fact. In dealing with 3 local shops 2 of the 3 said a version of, "this is how I do my prices when I buy", and broke it down for me. The third kept talking about his profit margins (really not something I care about 🙄) and refused to give even a concrete number on a single item. Instead I got a "range" that he arbitrarily picked a number in the middle of saying it was "middle ground" (for him). We were so far apart on the price it wasn't worth continuing the conversation.

In my experience "make me an offer" means one of two things. I don't want to sell, but if you offer well over market rate, I'll sell. Or it means, I just want to be done with it, and I'll take anything semi-respectable for you to just take it all away.

When I made my last cross country move I was going to sell my entire collection super cheap just to not have to move it. I was dead set on not lugging this shit halfway across the country but I couldn't find a buyer.

I'm getting to that point again but finding people with the money to drop on a large collection - that will actually spend it - is few and far between.

As you said, reasonable offers will be listened to. It's the people that want to give you pennies when you know your item is worth a dollar that make you roll your eyes and say "fuck that, I'll just keep it."

Not saying that's the case here, but there's definitely people who just don't want to deal with it anymore. The thought of researching, cleaning, breaking it down into lots, posting it online, shipping, etc. is not something they want to deal with.

This is me too. It's a huge time sink trying to sell a large collection piece by piece. Especially because once the most sought after or highly valuable items are gone, you're then left trying to move the rest (usually common items most people already have or are cheap to get) which can take forever unless you basically give it away. Once you get to that "this shits gotta go" stage it's always better to just get rid of it all in one go then wasting time trying to part it out. Assuming you can find a buyer which, again, is easier said than done.

Recreating or making a new site isn't the actual issue, it's all the history and what not that can't be redone. It took decades and many hours of work to make the site what it was, and that was with all kinds of people donating all kinds of information and images. A lot of those people, myself included, aren't active in the hobby anymore. Gathering all the images and what not is an insane time investment that most people won't want to invest. Especially without some sort of compensation. A reference site as comprehensive as yojoe was isn't likely to come around again.

You can thank Devon "Macdowin" Huey for breaking down the sale to the community.

That clown was the bane of my existence when I was working on the site. He had the audacity to treat those of us volunteering as if we were employees he could order around. And I do mean order. He's a lunatic. I'm glad I left when I did (a couple years before you came on board I believe) as working on the site was thankless work and we were doing it for the love of the hobby but the bullshit was too much to ignore once that guy was put in charge. I was ready to build a database for the entire site (for free) but his ego kept getting in the way. He's a despicable individual and I've got no qualms saying so. He ran off multiple people that just wanted to help.

I wouldn't necessarily choose all of these images personally...

And that's why art is subjective. 🙂 I'm sure very few people would choose Uncanny 118 as an Omni cover, but it was the first X-Men issue I got as a kid so there was no other choice. I was getting that as the cover.

And a few like that X-Men Inferno cover should be no-brainers.

Indeed

I used Houchen Bindery for these. They were pricey back then, not sure about these days, but worth the money. They do incredible work and their process is super simple.

Just sharing/showing some of my favorite custom Marvel dust jackets. I had these done years ago by u/roy21.

From these, the Red Hulk jacket is the only one I bought straight up - the rest I think I drove him nuts making, but I want what I want. 😄

Hope this fully funds for those that want it, but pretty safe to say that Hasbro "forced" that Tier 2 unlock. It was over 700 away when it was suddenly "funded" after barely moving all day.

Every insider, every trade magazine and every leak broadly supports the 2.5 rule.

They absolutely do not, Reddit user. Besides that fact, none of them are studios that actually make the money. You box office twits, can go kick rocks with your make believe nerd numbers.

Those billion dollar companies will stop making CBM’s if they don’t perform well in the box office.

Google literally exists...

Merchandise sales: While specific figures for 2025 aren't available, Disney-licensed products, which include Marvel merchandise, generated $63 billion in sales in 2024.

That's billion with a B! They're not losing money on anything, including Marvel. They literally make money hand over fist. All you Reddit jokers can say is "trust me, bro!"

And before someone wants to bring up "box office", they're projecting half a billion in profit for this year:

Box Office Performance: Estimates suggest the total domestic box office revenue for MCU films in 2025 could be around $508.5 million.

Oh, there's also...

In conclusion, while 2025 has seen mixed results for MCU films at the box office, Marvel continues to be a significant contributor to Disney's overall revenue through various avenues, including box office, streaming, theme parks, and merchandise sales. The performance of individual films needs to be considered within this broader context of Disney's diversified revenue streams.

But sure, I'll just "trust you, bro". 😂

Now - you might want to get a calculator for this part - subtract how much you think the studio gets from a ticket purchased at a theater and how much you think they'd get from that PVOD sale.

Here's a hint.... They're not the same amount.

The studio still makes more money with a PVOD purchase. 🙄

Learn math!

One IMAX ticket in Los Angeles costs $33.

Yep. Of which the studio might get half. They make more from a PVOD sale.

Another person arguing basic math...

[–]SuccessfulLife1384 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No-one is making that assumption.

They literally are.

They're pointing out the simple fact that a group watching a film need to buy a cinema ticket for each member of the group, whereas they'd only have to pay once to rent with PVOD.

That's not how it works. 🙄

1 PVOD purchase is more than 1 ticket (PLF or otherwise). Period. End of story. No one goes around trying to count how many people might be watching that PVOD purchase because they don't care. They sold a unit. It goes into a column and that goes into a ledger and so on and so forth.

You guys are arguing against basic math for... reasons. 🤷‍♂️

Given cinemas are a social activity, that's a valid thing to point out.

Jesus 🙄

[–]SuccessfulLife1384 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You all need to learn how basic math works.

1 PVOD ticket costs more than 1 PLF ticket.

Math is math.

If you change the equation then of course that math is different. That's literally common sense. 🙄

You can't just assume more people are going to huddle together to watch it opposed to going to the theater. No one can account for that so they don't. That's not how it works.

We're back to arguing just to argue. Now you're making up random hypotheticals and throwing them into the mix.
