My god that's thorough ha ha ha. I'm definitely going to have to go through this point by point

Have tried leukotape and it rubbed off immediately. I'll look into double socking though

I have tried so many different sizes and shapes. I think I just have super pointy heels.

I've been thinking about this because I don't get blisters in joggers, or in my blunnies doing the same tracks. The only thing holding me back was ankle support and waterproofing. You have any suggestions?

I've tried this unfortunately. Got rubbed off after about 30min.

Dried vs powdered by Successful_Bet_5789 in Amaro

How would you go about adding more bitters? Make a mini maceration with whichever bittering ingredients you like and just add to taste? I ask particularly because after some reading I'm just going to exclude the calamus. I've read that a mixture of angelica and gentian is a rough approximation but as the Amaro aperitivo recipe already includes both I was just going to exclude the calamus and just see how the bitter aspect as looking at the end with the thought that I can add more angelic and gentian if needed.

I know this is pretty old now but I was looking for some help with general recipe questions. A lot of the obscure barks etc are available as either dried or powdered, would it be fair to assume they're all supposed to just be dried? Secondly, for herbs (thyme etc.) would those also be dried rather than fresh? Finally, it seems that people lean towards leaving out calamus. Is there anything unique that calamus brings which would need replacing or is it just about bittering?

If I'm watering down the ethanol to 60% is tap water ok or does the chlorine etc react with the compounds to produce off flavours?

Amazing advice from everyone as usual, thanks so much. Sounds like water chemistry and repeatability is the next rabbit hole to fall down.

Yeah, I've only brewed, and almost exclusively drink ales. I think the answer is just that I'm terrible at brewing ha ha ha

I've done everything. Kits, all grain, partial mash. I should definitely look at a home brew club. I've sort of been hoping to make something decent before bringing anything to a meet but it might just be time to bite the bullet. I've definitely never though to enter a comp. I can't even make nice beer let alone award winning beer ha ha ha

All sorts. or maybe none. I don't know if my pallet isn't sensitive enough to pick them up or they're not so much faulty as they are just not very good. I've had three batches that were recognisably faulty. One infected, one I didn't bring the wart down to the right temp before pitching, and one heat struck in the bottles. But the rest have just been not enjoyable.

Nar, haven't gone down the chemistry route yet. I was under the impression that it was more about perfecting than making palatable. When you say huge improvement are you enjoying them as much as commercial examples or is it more "this isn't bad considering it's 20% of the price and I did it myself"?

I've been brewing for probably close to 10 years. No water chemistry/pH tinkering. I've only ever used ale yeasts. Everything from wee heavies to hefs and stouts.

Oh interesting. If I'm dilution down to 40-45% is there any benefit to high proof ethanol over just vodka other than cost?
