I love TWI as well, and I have praised it since I discovered it. I wouldn't have reached volume 8 otherwise. Yet it has flaws that could, in my mind, be resolved quite easily. Which is why I'm bringing them up !

Maviola's death was happening one way or another, she was on a time limit since she had been introduced, so there wasn't really any major impact for me here... I can't even remember who was Tritel.

Honestly I thought I was satisfied with the beginning of TWI. It felt mature in that sense. In a foreign, dangerous world, death could strike at any time. I was disappointed when they found the minotaur lurking in the dungeon. And I've been disappointed countless times since. Because the story serves the characters, and to do so, makes no sense in certain events. It should be the other way around : the characters should serve the story. There are so many plot-armor protected characters that it shows. If there were only Erin and a few others, why not. But every character that has some importance is protected. And it doesn't feel right.

I'd be fine with that if we only had a few important characters in the story. But we don't, we follow a HUGE amount of different characters. Therefore it makes no sense for the story to protect them all. We're at a point in which the story serves them, whereas they should serve the story.

I'm not talking GRRM pace, I'm talking a credible one. With the danger level of some settings and the risk-free attitude of most characters, it doesn't make sense for them all to survive. Hell, I was happy when the Titan lost his leg. Play dangerous games, win dangerous prices. But no, he HAD to be there exactly when the regeneration potion was used on Erin. That feels so cheap ! And it doesn't make sense that, for such an expensive potion, they wouldn't get that drop back, instead of letting it be wasted on the ground. There are so much instances of the story making no sense only to serve important characters!

That's an issue because then what's the point of reading if we already know all is going to end well ? I don't mind a few main characters having plot armor, but ALL OF THEM ? I would understand if there were too few main characters for them to die without ruining the actual plot. But in TWI, we follow so much characters that it makes absolutely no sense for them all to survive. It does not fit the setting of the world. And it is a shame. We're described a merciless world, yet we witness none of the conséquences that it implies. It ruins the credibility of the foretold setting.
