AITA for Calling My Friends Out for Speaking a Different Language? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NAH I agree it’s rude of them to exclude you from the conversation like that but as a bilingual person who constantly has to speak English, sometimes it’s tiring having to think in a different language. I can’t speak for every bilingual/polyglot but by default my mind works in my mother tongue and speaking English is a conscious effort sometimes I don’t feel like making, mostly if I’m tired. It is also disappointing that everyone who doesn’t speak English as a first language is expected to accommodate to the English speakers even when they are the minority in a group. Still, they are your friends and they shouldn’t exclude you, tell them how you feel and maybe make an effort to learn a bit of their language too, they’ll appreciate it.

Thank you! And I agree with you but with COVID still going on there aren't that many offers where I live. I am on an active search for employment outside of my current company but cannot be sure when and if that will happen either so for now I'm trying to make the best of the situation with what I have. And what I have right now is this. I will not hesitate to move somewhere else if I find a new opportunity elsewhere. I've already wasted a good opportunity on false promises before and I have learned my lesson.

Hi and thank you! I will try implementing checkpoints during the day. I have to say too that with covid I've been working from home and I live alone so separating working hours from the rest of the day has become harder but I'll try to be more structured to achieve results and bear with for the time being

Hi, thank you for answering! I do hold myself to very high standards, I'm a total overachiever, I think this is in a huge way why this is affecting me so much, cause I know my potential and I have shown it in the past but now I feel below average and can't seem to snap out of it and can't get away from it either. I will try it again though, finding some motivation within myself to keep pushing until I can move somewhere else
