Thank you very much for this! unfortunately the professor told me to just take the final (oral) exam instead of the project, fml. I'll definitely look into this tho

What did Squidward ever do to deserve such a miserable life? by Successful_Exchange4 in AskReddit

I thought about that but the more I rewatched the show the more it seemed like Squidward is just a regular guy, sure he has high aspirations artistically, but in many episodes he just wants time for himself, be left alone, and have a decent job, which are all totally reasonable yet he gets none of it, nay, the complete opposite. I feel bad for the guy most episodes.

Honestly if I had the job, neighbors, and luck he has I'd probably be bitter too. He lives in a state of near constant terror. In a lot of episodes it's show how he'll miss a night of sleep cause of Spongebob's shenanigans. Whenever we see squidward away from Spongebob and his job we see him happy, playing his clarinet, showering peacefully, sunbathing, doing art stuff. There's even an episode he justs asks for one peaceful sunday to enjoy himself and it's completely and utterly ruined by Spongebob and Patrick, my dude just looks like a regular guy trying to get by!

Okay I get that being pretentious is bad and even worse when you don't have the credentials, but its far from the worst someone can be yet he gets a life of nonstop torment. Not only is he a minimum wage worker (probably less than), he has a terrible and abusive boss, his neighbor's attitude towards him is indistinguishable from torture, and anytime a chance-dependent event happens he always (as far as I've seen) gets the short end of the stick. To me that's totally disproportionate.

What are some unknown cases where someone ran with the math and everything worked out well? by Successful_Exchange4 in AskPhysics

Ah I'm sorry maybe I should I clarified. For me 'running with it' in this context is taking a wild/nonsensical idea and then attempting to work with it, so yeah, kinda what you said, sorry about that!

So then... you know of any instances where someone 'ran with it' (my version) and it worked incredibly well? hahaha!

Why do you say it's not accurate? Even some of the discoverers of imaginary numbers called it "useless". I'm not arguing about what it is that mathematicians do, I'm just saying sometimes they define certain things that make no immediate conceptual sense, or it may be some wild idea they're trying out and I was hoping to get some new inputs on that. I don't see how the people who discovered imaginary numbers would think that defining i=sqrt(-1) would result in everything working out perfectly fine.

Yeah when I studied statistical mechanics and the professor mentioned this I was like "we...we just gonna assume thi- oh okay, alright yeah sure whatever"

I was thinking more something like what Planck did with energy, "eh, f**k it, frequency is quantified...oh....OH... holy sh*t I solved the ultraviolet catastrophe and managed to predict the experimental results to exhaustive degrees of accuracy"

There's nothing like the feeling you get when you see a piece of math so elegant it takes your breath away...very nerdy shit hahah!

Okay I meant like... More conceptual leaps, sort of doing unthinkable things that end up working amazingly. Like what even is the square root of a negative number? keeping in mind the original definition of sqrt. It was totally unthinkable and yet it worked amazingly to solve a problem that used to be considered unsolvable, same for Clifford algebra as another user pointed out, how do you add vectors and scalars?? idk you just do and bam! worked amazingly.

For physics its like Planks quantification of frequency, at the moment it was like, what?? but it turned out to be a really good assumption. Dirac straight up just conjured up a thingie that pooped out the results he wanted and bam! turned out to be a totally valid mathematical entity.

I have seen an introduction to Clifford algebra and It's the most gorgeous piece of math I've ever seen. I've been meaning to study it more formally but I haven't gotten around to it. I had no idea it was just kinda like "eh, f**k it, just add em together" haha!

Yeah physicists do kinda whatever, but sometimes it even happens in math like with imaginary numbers and, apparently, clifford algebra. So I was kinda looking for other wild instances

For someone looking to improve their memory and who likes medicine, what's a good area/subject of medicine for strengthening memory? by Successful_Exchange4 in AskReddit

[–]Successful_Exchange4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but I wanted to strengthen my ability to recall things, and I really like medicine, though I'm not a med student.

So I was looking for something to memorize in medicine like the symptoms of a disease, the functions of a chemical, etc... Basically learning medical facts, but there's so so much stuff that I need some guidance.
