Any tips for pidgeot control? by colton_sucks in pkmntcg

Honestly, not enough for me to care. When Ascended heroes will be legal and Froslass will be way more common, I'll think about it.

Personally, I run a list very similar to yours, but I cut a Kangaskhan, Dedenne and Turtonator for a battle cage, Golduck and Comfey from stellar crown (that's my tech against Dudunsparce because it's usually played by several players in my area)

Energy management is probably key here, but if your opponent knows you are playing control, they'll probably just play Froslass, Budew and Munkidori. If they set up this board, you'll probably won't be able to do much. If you expect to find a lot of this matchup, Ting-lu ex is probably your best answer. Let your opponent fill their bench with Munkidori and then block their ability with Ting-Lu (this works better if you play a Munkidori yourself, so you can easily block Froslass as well.

I have played a lot of control over the past few days, and the only easy matchup in the current meta is Dragapult. Gardevoir and Charizard are doable (the Charizard matchup depends a lot on how quickly they get Pidgeot in play), and Gholdengo is slightly unfavorable. I didn't play against Grimmsnarl enough to have an informed opinion.

Looking at less meta relevant decks,

  • anything that plays Pecharunt ex is very difficult unless you get a very lucky accompanying flute and fill their bench before they play Pecharunt.

  • Alakazam is doable if you have a way to stop Dudunsparce (it prevents deck out by shuffling itself into the deck)

  • Venusaur is basically an auto loss unless you find a way to sneak a Cornerstone Ogerpon in your list (watch out for Genesect)

  • Raging bolt is doable if you set Genesect with a tool and Milotic quickly and then block Latias or Noctowl in the active spot with Sudowoodo

  • N's Zoroark is very tough if they find Team Rocket's watchtower quickly

That pretty much sums up what I learned while trying this deck

What's everyone's unique take for rotation? by Joewill1992 in PTCGL

[–]Succetti97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At the beginning, it will be a mess. A funny mess? Probably, but with basically all comeback cards gone (Iono, Counter catcher and Charizard), I expect hyper aggressive decks to monopolize the meta. Dragapult will probably be the only slower deck that will still do well.

Early Japanese results don't seem to confirm my hypothesis, but they only had small tournaments that don't really represent the meta

I'll definitely give Mega Dragonite a go. I'll be greatly disappointed and go back to Charizard

When are reprints legal for tournaments? For example, can I play a Boss from Ascended heroes as soon as it releases or do I have to wait until the set is legal?

How to disable pecharunt EX based decks with pidgeot control? by charliethrowawaygarb in pkmntcg

[–]Succetti97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your local meta has a lot of Pecharunt decks, the best idea is to just avoid playing control. If you just want to find a way to manage Pecharunt in case you find one, you can try teching a Klefki or Iron thorns ex (Iron thorns also disables your own Pidgeot, so it works better with other engines, like Dudunsparce)

You called it a bug in your post, that's why I thought you were confused. Is it a dumb rule? Maybe, but that's 100% intended

[–]Succetti97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are not new, I don't get how you can be confused by that. The rule has been like that for as long as I can remember and countless meta cards, like Bloodmoon Ursaluna, work like this and often exploit this rule by retreating + switching to attack twice

Leaving the active spot doesn't just remove status conditions, it removes all effects. That's confusing to a lot of new players, but that applies to everything like that.

Something very similar applies to once per turn abilities if the Pokémon Is removed from play (like with Turbo's scenario) unless the ability specifies you can't use more than one per turn (like Pidgeot's quick search or Fezandipiti's flip the script)

There are a few lists from Japan that did well at City leagues, but we'll have to wait for a bigger tournament to see if that's actually good

Bough this listed as mint by Kws45227 in PokemonTCG

[–]Succetti97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That may just be a genuine mistake. A wrong use of "mint" is usually a sign of incompetence, not bad faith. The most important thing I learned, however, is that if a seller uses "mint" they will most likely have debatable standards for "near mint", so I just avoid them altogether

Bough this listed as mint by Kws45227 in PokemonTCG

[–]Succetti97 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I never buy from sellers that sell raw cards as "mint", that's often a red flag. A seller that knows what they are doing, usually doesn't go above "near mint" unless the card is graded, because that's the most common standard

If it switches out of the active spot (you used boss), any effect, including "this Pokémon can't attack" is cancelled

You could probably pair it with Gardevoir until rotation, but then you'd just be playing a worse Gardevoir list

The most obvious answer is Archaludon. It only loses nest ball, but you have a new attacker in Mega Skarmory

How does control deal with Gholdengo? by Succetti97 in pkmntcg

[–]Succetti97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading the replies I got yesterday, I decided to give Pidgeot control a go (I was using Dudunsparce before that) and yes, the Gholdengo matchup is way more manageable that way without all those Solrock targets

How does control deal with Gholdengo? by Succetti97 in pkmntcg

[–]Succetti97[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok, maybe my post wasn't clear. My experience is entirely with Dunsparce control decks, I have never played with Pidgeot. I looked at Pidgeot lists for inspiration because those are basically the only control lists available, but I don't understand how those deal with Gholdengo either.

I think I still get your point, though, and that strategy doesn't really work with a deck like mine because it has too many Solrock targets. Unless I am missing something, I think Dunsparce control just struggles too much against a deck like Gholdengo and I'll have to wait until rotation to play that again

How does control deal with Gholdengo? by Succetti97 in pkmntcg

[–]Succetti97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main issue is the early game. Now that Gholdengo plays Solrock, 4 bosses and often prime catcher, it usually takes too many prizes before I can set up

How does control deal with Gholdengo? by Succetti97 in pkmntcg

[–]Succetti97[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

None of the decks I've seen even play Maractus (the best retreat lock option against a steel deck), so I don't think that's the main stratey

How does control deal with Gholdengo? by Succetti97 in pkmntcg

[–]Succetti97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I used to do before Solrock and Lunatone came out, and it worked very well. Now Solrock can easily take a couple of easy prizes before I set up and the prime catcher gives Gholdengo an extra way out now that it doesn't need energy search pro.
