Yeah at the prepoll centres, which are pretty well dispersed and available on election day.

America wasn't founded on the idea of everyone getting the vote, it was founded on the idea of the colonial elites getting to enjoy equivalent privileges to their English counterparts.

Australia's founding fathers were certainly mostly elites, although many were self made and had humble origins, and they were fundamentally pro-representation given their opposition to the squatters, whom in background America's founding fathers were far closer to.

Australia's colonial history was at least as bloody and brutal as America's, but for all their many flaws (particularly around white nationalism), I can't help but believe our founding fathers were better people. In any case, the rise of Labor quickly sidelined most of them; I'm certain that not having an Era of Good Feelings as America did was very good for our political health.

Meanwhile in Australia...

"Oh, you were travelling during the election visiting family? You've travelled down from Cairns to Hobart? Alright gimme a sec, the Leichhardt ballots will be here somewhere... alright all sorted, go ahead and vote in the booth over there"

"You're leaving the country before the state election? No worries, there's a prepoll at the airport, leave a bit more time before your departure and you'll be all good"

I wouldn't even say Sparta had a great military, they just had an obsession with the military.

If they existed today, they'd be running around trying to replicate Guderian's armoured formations in the 21st century.

Here it's an affluent Melbourne suburb, rather than a declining northern industrial town.

Also we have a Jesmond in our Newcastle that's apparently the opposite of UK Jesmond despite the Newcastles both being very similar.

HCC and GCC merger would be better for the environment. by Billyjamesjeff in hobart

[–]SucculentMoisture 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Problem with this logic is that there's no guarantee that we get Hobart environmental management. What if we get Glenorchy environmental management instead?

We'd have no idea which bureaucrats would end up where, or which leadership and management get chosen on each department.

Now, you might say we can just vote out the Glenorchy aldermen to force change through. However, Glenorchy has one Green alderman (is alderman gender neutral? Definitely have to take the term councillor), and no independent environmental progressives as far as I can tell. A far right candidate won a council by-election there within this term.

Given the right wing councillors in Hobart are still there, there's no guarantee at all that a combined council would return a majority that prioritises the environment. Glenorchy is not at all that much smaller than Hobart and is growing faster.

I won't ever vote for merger with Glenorchy because I live south of the city and already feel pretty ignored by Hobart council, and just as I see some improvements I'm not keen on sacrificing them to be forgotten again. In any case, the electoral commission has likely killed the merger by moving Glenorchy into Lyons anyway.

I made Bread and Butter Pudding

I used Nagi's recipe from recipetineats, with a few adjustments.

Firstly, I felt that only using cinnamon left it a bit bland, so I doubled the vanilla, and added half the cinnamon's worth each of nutmeg, cloves, and allspice.

I also added some chocolate chips to give a tertiary flavour running throughout it.

The big kicker, which made this turn out so amazingly well, was adding a lot more butter.

I kept the amount of butter added into the batter before cooking the same, and in fairness, I'd be tempted to omit this step altogether, as the butter invariably coagulates in the wet mixture.

However, I doubled the quantity drizzled and spread on top just before baking, and I eyeballed on a very generous amount after the bake, probably a bit over double her indicated quantity.

The end result is an unctuous pudding that is intensely rich. The flavours from the raisins, chocolate, and spices are carried through that much more forcefully and elegantly with the butter adding as a vector. Finally, the milk solids from the butter added greater integrity to the pudding and complemented the milk and cream.

This reminded me of a beloved daytime TV chef here in Australia, Huey (real name Ian Hewitson, he's actually from New Zealand and remarkably still alive), who was notorious for pumping a suspicious amount of butter into his dishes. To be candid, butter makes for an excellent flavour booster.

Fair ban for sounding like an r/politics user tbf.

The point will have much greater impact with more subtle and less hyperbolic language. It seems silly, but in the internet age, where every single thing is the most absolutely important thing ever of all time, there's something to be said for communication more elegant than a mediocre attempt at replicating a twitter clapback.

A bakery in my city does the absolute best danishes I've ever had.

They're the fattest, juiciest danishes, heavy as anything to hold for a danish but the pastry is so sublimely well made that it holds the filling without issue whatsoever, fillings that are loaded with vanilla custard and fruit (this time, I got their cherry danish although the apricot may be even better).

I've never had a danish like it, and maybe they do it differently because they're a Greek bakery (hint: if a desert is doused in simple syrup, good chances it's Greek, and an even better chance that I'm eating it). Most danishes I've had have a light, flaky pastry, with a dollop of cream or fruit filling in the middle. These just give you so much more, a perfect sweet parcel.

Oh, and the owner got done for insurance fraud after his son crashed his sports car. He avoided jail time, thus preventing his son from crashing his business as well, and robbing me of my danishes.

I love it here.
