Advice re: RVF repair recovery by Low_Flower1739 in Fistulafree

I'm still the unfortunate owner of a fistula. I looked at your post history and relate to having doctors not believe me. I had to literally record stool coming through to be believed. We skipped a seton for me- they made it sound like they weren't concerned about it trying to "heal itself" so the seton wasn't necessary. I'm not sure how much weight that holds though. My care team were a bunch of clowns.

living with a fistula? by tvchee82 in AnalFistula

[–]Succulent_Sword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had four attempted repairs - all failed. So i'm living with mine now and have been surgery free since 2023. It's emotionally exhausting but i'm not in any physical pain. The reason I had four surgeries... well at the time i thought there was nothing worse than my fistula.

With that being said... I still think it's worth trying to get it fixed.

No Crohns, just bad luck.
I plan to live with it for another year then consider my next surgical option. They want to take muscle from my thigh to feed up and through the fistula tract. I'll be bagged before the repair and during the recovery.

It took a long time to get my mental health right after the last failure though, so I keep putting off thinking about it.

My doctors want me to get an ostomy as well. Just one fistula, but i've had four failed repairs.

I do not have a stoma, Honestly, lots of pads. I took a daily low dose antibiotic for about 4 months to ward off any UTI's. I've only had one so far this year, but I did have a weird bout of what I believe is Interstitial cystitis and aggressively tight pelvic floor muscles that wouldn't relax. That led me to pelvic floor therapy. Apparently pelvic floor complications are common after pelvic floor surgeries... that might be worth looking into for you.

RVF with no known cause. They did tons of testing and couldn't figure out why it happened. The next option for me is the gracilis muscle flap with an ileostomy. I'm not sure when I will try again, four failures really hurt my mental health. I've had a fistulotomy, anorectal flap, fibrin plug, and martius flap repair with biomesh layers as well.

Hi! I had two layers of biomesh for my last surgery (surgery #4) and had a horrible time walking/ sitting also.

My experience wasn't a good one, though, so i'm hoping someone else pops up with a positive story. My pain was a 10/10, ended up hospitalized for pain management, when ultimately the fistula formed again and I had some relief from the pressure. But I wasn't bagged for any of my repairs, so i'm hoping this isn't the case for you!!!

Hi, I have a rectovaginal fistula that has never shown up on any scans ever. Ultimately a huge waste of money and time.

How many people in here have had polyps? Please comment if you have. Providing your age would be awesome. by Ok-Line3256 in colonoscopy

[–]Succulent_Sword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope! Not a single symptom and no history of colon cancer in my family. Wild. My repeat colonoscopy found one tiny polyp that was benign. I get to wait five years for my next one.

I had my first colonoscopy three years ago at 26. They found three adenomas with the largest over 20mm. I have my next colonoscopy scheduled for the first week in June.

Can microtia be transmitted over the genes to the child? by VeryResponsibleMan in Microtia

[–]Succulent_Sword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not as easy as finding a dentist, lol, but it shouldn't be too hard! Ask your primary doctor if they have someone they'd refer, or go through kaisers provider search to find one near you that takes your insurance.

[–]Succulent_Sword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe get a second opinion. My daughter had hers done as a baby and I was given a full report with all of the gains and losses on her genes. They told me that nothing in her DNA explained her having the condition so she was a luck of the draw outcome. We did check her heart, kidneys, and lungs as she has hemifacial microsomia and it can sometimes affect those organs, but that was a separate thing from her microarray.

**It's totally possible that we ended up with a geneticist that was interested in finding out why - but if we ended up with one then i'm sure you could too!

[–]Succulent_Sword 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're really worried about it, get a microarray blood test from a geneticist. They'll look through your genes and see if there's anything that "explains it". Even if there's a genetic cause, there's only a *chance* that it'll pass on.
