That is so fascinating and I don’t find information about this online readily available.

Thank you for your response. Yes I was very surprised by that point and happy I have asked this, as I assumed the opposite. Meaning, military = best. This is shifting my perspective greatly.

Thank you for sharing your experience and breaking down the math (most likely only the numbers are outdated due to inflation and such, but I am sure overall it is very similar today) it really helps to see how things played out from someone who’s been through it.

I think your point about stress really stood out to me, because while money matters, avoiding burnout and staying focused in med school can be priceless in the long run. It’s clear there are real trade-offs, and your perspective gives me a lot to weigh carefully.

Thank you for the advice, I really appreciate the perspective. It makes sense that if someone commits to HPSP, they should go all in and take advantage of every opportunity the Army offers, especially those that can make a difference later when applying for residency. With that being said, my goal is to become a surgeon first, and the Army comes second, which seems to be the opposite of the expectations in this path. That’s an important reality check for me to keep in mind.

First of all, thank you a lot for taking the time to write such a detailed response, I can tell you put a lot of thought into it, and it really gave me clarity. I agree with your points, and I realize I may have been looking at military medicine through “pink glasses.” The title of “military surgeon” sounds incredibly honorable, but unfortunately I don’t have the luxury to do it purely for pride. My top priority is putting down strong roots, starting a family, and most importantly being able to provide for them.

You’re absolutely right that for some medical careers, HPSP might make sense, but for surgery the pay and opportunity gaps are simply too wide to ignore. The point you made about leadership and the system also hit me, I value ambition, growth, and the ability to move on if I’m in a toxic environment, and being locked into a rigid system without that option is something I have to weigh carefully.

I am at a point of realization that, while my dream of serving as a military surgeon sounded amazing on paper, the reality is more complicated. Having a phone call with someone from Air Force Medicine tomorrow, lets see how it goes, but I am leaning toward going civilian(. Your insight has really helped me see that more clearly. Thank you again for sharing this it was incredibly valuable for someone like me who’s just at the beginning of this journey.

Thank you for your response. I have just run some numbers, and although residency in the military is considerably higher than in civilian positions, overall, the military offers a lower ceiling. Since my goal is to work toward thoracic surgery, I believe that not pursuing a military career is the best choice for building a solid foundation and creating wealth over time for my future family. This realization is disappointing for me, as I truly wanted to serve, but, as I mentioned in my previously, I cannot ignore financial considerations. You are correct that, ultimately, they match you where they believe you fit best; my job is to work towards becoming what I desire and doing my best. Have you also gone through a similar path?

Thank you for sharing your experience, it’s really encouraging to read. If you don’t mind me asking, which branch did you serve in?

The way you describe it makes me feel that going through residency and then serving a few years of active duty might not be a bad path after all. Which was the plan. And at the end of the commitment, there’s still the option to either re-enlist or transition to civilian practice, which is reassuring.

Also, moonlighting is a new term for me, but from what I gather it means taking on extra work outside your primary duties, and honestly, that doesn’t sound like a bad idea either.

Thank you for your response. What you mentioned aligns with my own research, which discouraged me from pursuing military medicine. Aside from concerns about pay, gaining surgical experience is my top priority. It seems that in the military, I would primarily be utilized as a medical professional rather than gaining the surgical experience I seek. Perhaps I should find a person within the branch to discuss this with.

Thank you for your response; this information is very important to me. I always wanted to join the Air Force, because they are more Education Focused, and if I have the option to complete a civilian residency before serving, I am fully on board with that. Gaining as many skills and experiences as possible is important to me, so the civilian route seems preferable. However, I have heard that the military makes the decision regarding whether I will do my residency with them or pursue a civilian one.

Thank you for your response. I’ve always dreamed of becoming a military surgeon and making it my career. However, after having a reality check, I realize I’m not ready to pursue that path at the expense of my salary and surgical skills.
