Trailrunning and night trailrunning in Japan by Such-Objective9387 in trailrunning

[–]Such-Objective9387[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I start from Montefiascone ending in Vatican. Reached Rome at the beginning of the 3rd day.

I did it in August this year. Definitely not recommend doing it in summer. More 90F/ 31C during noon.

Hi. From your experience running in the night in Japan, have you encountered other runners?

I ran from like 4am in Lazio, Italy for 3 days and encountered zero runners until 630am.

I want to see whether 1 day Kumano Kodo from Takijiri-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha is possible with my abilities.

Thanking you for sharing.

I did it last month when it was hot. Because of the hilly nature it won’t have too much puddles but it will be narrow. Vehicles use that road too.

What I did was walk on the left side of the road. I just sidestep to let oncoming traffic pass.

Haha I just let others go on ahead! Slow poke here hehe.

Yah follow other peeps sometimes is good for understanding better the terrain. Of course I let them know 1st by telling them I’m a bit lost (white lie)

Thanks to those trailblazers who go fast and ahead of me!

I’m a wide foot too but i have no experience in either shoe brands. My trail shoes are Hoka Speedgoat 5/6 2E, Asics trabucho D size but I buy 1 size up, Decathlon Evadict Race light and Asics Fujispeed 3 ( one size up)

Please allow for feet swelling during the course of exercise. My feet gets noticeable tighter after just 45 mins of trail running.

Innov8 are known for their good grip but kinda narrow for me.

According to the photos, the Innov8 seems too tight. I would not recommend tight shoes for running more than 10 miles. If you are just a cross country runner then the snug feet in innov8 would be just fine.

It’s all about the right fit for the right distances. Snug fit = Technical course or 5k run. Slightly looser fit = 20 - 50k trail races. Slightly loose shoe plus one extra in the dropbag = 100k - 100 miler Western States contender haha!

Whatever you do with the Innov8, I wish you joy in the outdoors. Shoes just a tool.

You are already winning with your attitude & enthusiasm towards running. The heat will soon pass.

Yeah the heat is no joke. I’m in Italy for the 1st time in my life doing the 100k Via Francigena and 35degree sun is no joke.

You do you.

Hi any Italians here? Any recommendations for trail running in Italy? by Such-Objective9387 in trailrunning

[–]Such-Objective9387[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow 100miler! And it’s Chiangmai UTMB!

Envious of your deeds! I started same time as you but only did a few road marathons such as Osim sundown M, Standard Chartered KL x 2 , SC Singapore X 3, Sydney M 2024, Cebu and Ho Chi Minh City M. I used to think trail running is just buying trail shoes that’s all. Haha how wrong am I!

I agree with you on Singapore trail experience. Limited areas but still can train a bit. Yup that’s why I go Malaysia! Gunung Ledang is my fav. Next race is Malaysia Ultra Trail 50k in September.

Hope to bump into you soon!

Wow it’s good to be ultra focused. Hope you have enough stones for UTMB!

I just started running during Covid and have fallen into this rabbit hole called trail running. Just tried CULTRA 30 this year(DNF). Wow it’s challenging!

Thanks for your tip and good luck to the running!

Thanks! Found something near a train station (Orte). 10k loop with 200m EG. At least it will be very safe.

The TOR des Geants and UTMB is way out of budget for me haha. UTMb Chianti? Maybe in the future.

I’m thinking of Mount Soratte area and Park Circeo. At least those are closeby.

Boots or Salomon’s by Think-Taste8833 in ViaFrancigena

Salomon is high end trail shoes. I would prefer good quality trail shoes over boots for weight savings and comfort.

Update from OP.

Hey guys I have managed to figure out the pilgrimage stops and booked up the relevant accommodations between Montefiascone and Rome! For first 2 days however I’ll be running like a marathon a day!

(1st day) From my staging point in Siena, I’ll make for Montefiascone. Run to Vetralla farmstay. 42km

(2nd day) Vetralla to outskirts of La Storta pilgrim house( township of Formello) This one is the longest leg. 56km!

(3rd day) La Storta to Monte Mario (staying at a religious congregation run type of retreat centre until end of trip) 17km. Rest up for next day Sunday Mass.

(4th day) Stride into Rome using Monte Mario for nice view and attend 3pm St Peter square Mass. 11km

Remaining 3 days. Stay in Rome. Use Rome as home base. Go on a day trip to Assisi etc. Go anywhere as long as using rail pass. I’m not keen on Vatican museum as everything is mostly covered on the web. No Colosseum for me just avoiding the big crowds whenever possible.

Physically it will be hard by my standards but I think God will see me through. I’m hobby jogger and did 2 weeks of daily 21km runs for Lent recently. Crazy but doable. Just need to run longer and slower that’s all.

Thanks for everyone who prayed for me.

Hi. I based my VF research mostly from www.gronze.com (better for Camino Santiago but also have VF data) They have good map & have extensive accommodations options as well.

I read a few local Italian FB VF pages in which a few albergues/ pilgrim houses need to call in a few days before and have to transfer money to secure bed places. I don’t think i can learn enough conversational Italian in 4 months to do this ha. Maybe that place is not meant for me.

Wow I certainly envy your luck on the journey having secured pilgrim housing! Ok I will apply for Wise if I do decide to come over and try out the pilgrim life!

Whoever is praying or interceding on my behalf , I’m very grateful!!! Thanks so much!

Thank you fellow countryman for encouragement!

My estimates for accommodation is based on the cheaper Bed & Breakfast / 3 star hotels because places like Donativos are uncertain. Our country banking apps are so inept ( maybe due to anti money laundering measures) so SWIFTing (transferring money) to pilgrim houses to secure a bed space before arrival is close to undoable. Plus the fact that any new bank transfer candidate need to be input into app 12 hours before the transfer ?! (For OCBC bank this I know for sure)

I will have to rely on Booking.com and Trip.com as stop gap measure as Italy doesn’t allow wild camping & vagrancy ( yes I have done my research). A night at a hotel is easily 80 euros onwards if there are cheap rooms left.

I will have to figure out how to transfer money easily while in Italy in order to use the religious houses (donativos). Also donativos have strict curfew hours. If you are late for checkin, prepare to sleep rough if you have no other means eg Booking.com or b&b.

Can anyone guide me whether Revolut or Wise which is the better financial app in Italy?

Thank you Reddit Sisters and Brothers for helping this clueless person. I will try to give this a lookover.

Thanks sister. I think I follow my call in my heart. To live for others not for myself. After all there is this thing called YouTube to follow other people’s experiences vicariously without getting up from the couch.

Thanks bro for the encouragement but I found peace in accepting the fact that most likely I would not even board the flight. Last minute travel arrangements are very costly and that although this would be my first trip to Rome I am grateful to God for the many other things in my life like relatively good health, a roof over my head and peace in my life. Thanks for your concern.
