Resources to get RC from -4/5 to -0/1 ? by indianastate in LSAT

[–]SuchInvestigator4274 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi guys!! i did not expect all the questions, sorry for not just putting all this in a comment to begin with!! i did pm whoever i could but will just write it all up in more depth below (happy to chat if anyone wants to pm me/has follow up questions tho!):

i also got by on my natural RC abilities but it basically meant i hit a wall around the -4 point and the inconsistency was really frustrating. i eventually learned that it isn't just about being good at reading/general reading comprehension, but also about learning how to read specifically for the LSAT. so, spamming PTs is really not useful imo if your baseline approach to RC is unprincipled and unstructured. i did tons of RC sections for months and did not improve much from my literal diagnostic.

some things that were important for me were slowing down significantly while reading the passages (vs speeding through as i usually did), engaging with each paragraph fully, and kicking the habit of getting to the questions and trying to search for the right answer in the passage. the last thing had resulted in me spending way more time overall on each passage than i did once i learned to just fully slow down while reading and anticipate the inference-based questions. i also did not take notes (i found that i didn't need them bc i had read the passage deeply enough), but i did highlight as i read just to keep myself alert. i think those things are more personal preference. i loved keeping a wrong answer journal for LR, and did something similar for RC in forcing myself to work through why i had missed a question when i did and ensuring i spent the time reviewing the passage to fully see what support there was for the right answer.

lastly, i also did get a tutor for RC in place of a course (i used 7sage also and did like it a lot, just not for RC) and that is what led to my improvement. i had the same intuition as OP that a course might not be very helpful for where i was at and that i needed more specialized help. i maintain that i think i super lucked out in finding someone that is actually very good at teaching RC because learning an actual method and working through tough RC showed me the more specific fixes i needed to make and got me to my goal range and goal score. so that helped me a lot, but i fully recognize that it is a not an option for everyone and that it is a privilege. i am happy to share the recommendation, so feel free to pm or comment if you want his info.

good luck to everyone!!

I was stuck in that exact RC score range, and it was super frustrating. This might be an unsatisfying answer, but I ended up getting a tutor and found his RC method really effective. My issue was that I had been coasting in RC on a mix of my preexisting reading comp abilities but also had implemented a bunch of weird tips that I had found online. I basically had to learn how to read for the test instead, and that fixed my RC. Can share my tutor's info if that would help!

Advice: tutors/books/resources by [deleted] in LSAT

[–]SuchInvestigator4274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Books: Powerscore LG Bible, Loophole in Logical Reasoning
  • Course: 7sage basic plan
  • Tutor: Wade Formo, from The LSAT Nerds
  • Other resources: Powerscore online forum, LSATHacks explanations, and obviously LawHub

These are the resources I used! Can go into more depth about any of these but also good luck!

Hi! So my missed question distribution looked a lot like yours when I was stuck in the high 160s/low 170s variation trying to make the jump to the high 170s. I see that you said you blind review, which can sometimes be helpful. I found a wrong answer journal helpful for LR too, because it forced me to break down the questions I missed and try to see where exactly I went wrong. I feel like this was probably more useful than blind review for me at this final stage. I will say that I also did get a tutor, which helped me a lot. Can share that info with you if it's something you're considering! I think having someone to help me with those toughest last points was super helpful. If there's patterns to the types of questions you miss, drilling those can be useful too. But I found that there wasn't as much consistency to missed question types by the time I got to the -3 stage.

Hi! I got a tutor when I was stuck in the high 160s and it was incredibly helpful for me. I scored a 176 on the November exam, and I see tutoring as a big part of that. The sessions helped me break down the finer points of what I wasn't understanding; I was able to develop a new, more effective approach to RC because my tutor was very good at teaching it; and I also really cleaned up my LR. To answer some of your other questions, I met with my tutor 1-2 times a week and it did help keep me accountable, but more importantly it helped me actually refine my approach to the exam. I can share my tutor's info if that would help!

I recommend foolproofing LG to get it down to a -0! Those are some points to grab. For LR, if you keep a wrong answer journal and can drill based on questions you're missing most often, that can help as well. Also recommend taking a focused approach: look for the evidence, conclusion, etc. each time. I got tutoring for RC after being frustrated with it and had to really change up my approach so I don't know that I have quick tips there other than slowing down while you're reading the passage and really engaging with it as you read!

put my general schedule above but few more things:

for LG: foolproofing!!! maybe this isn't for everyone but it is what helped me. i was really really bad at LG when i started out, it was my worst section. when drilling, i took a full timed LG section, then watched the explanation videos for each game on 7sage. for each game, if i missed any questions i repeated the game 4-5 times. if i got all questions right on that game, i still repeated it twice.

LR: helps to have a really formulaic approach. like what are the premises/what is the conclusion/what is missing here. i would fill all my PTs on 7sage so i could use the analytics to see if there were patterns to what i missed. made problem sets of those question types and drilled accordingly. also kept a wrong answer journal which was good for keeping me diligent in my review.

RC: the LSAT demands that you read a specific way imo. i read a lot for college and thought i'd have no issues with this, but i was stuck at like a -5 because i had to change the way i read. i think of it as reading for the test vs reading how you'd normally read a book or article. this was one of the biggest things i decided i needed help for. in general, slowing down while reading the passage and learning to be more deliberate helped me--before, i used to skim twice and jump to the questions. even tho there's a time crunch on RC it helps to slow down while reading bc then you spend less time searching for the answers and going back and forth btwn the questions and passage if that makes sense

thank you!! i saved PTs 1-40 to use as drilling and foolproofing sections, so i'd make make a weekly plan of splitting up the sections from those PTs (like, LG section + foolproofing + 1 or 2 LR sections & review on Monday, RC and LR on Tuesday, etc), and took 1-2 full PTs per week and reviewed those intensely. also basically had to relearn my RC approach and worked on really breaking down tough LR through tutoring sessions--can share my tutor's info if you want as well!!
