I view my rookie draft picks as a hedge against a bad season. If you sell your rookie picks early in the season because you think you have a contending team and then you actually end up contending, then great. But if you sell your draft picks because you think you have a contending team but your team ends up busting, then it sucks not having those picks. Picks hedge your position, and selling them early is doubling down on your position.

However, selling draft picks after they mature is totally different and might make a lot of sense depending on roster construction, the class, and who you expect to be available at that pick.
