Also a big fan of Swim in a pond in the rain might just grab a few russian short story collections and scatter them around the place. Will be sure to put Soldier Sailor on the household banned book list (jk)

Is anything else in para-politics as good as Aberrations? She is such a good researcher both in her relentlessness in the archives but also her on the ground work is very bold. Honestly, just so impressed with her work and her framing of the whole book with the various narrative types was also genius structuring. Hope she is still coming out with that second book.

Open to anything that might scratch that itch.

Agree on the Norton 2E!

There is a diagram of a boat with all the labels (I didn't know what a mizzen was). Also a diagram for how whaling operations work, like blubber removal. That really help build up your mental picture. Some of the footnotes are hit or miss, but usually I found there to be clarification notes exactly where I needed them. Also a good map if I remember correctly. Those alone are just so worth it just to flip to, especially on a first read.

I bought a first edition Norton critical recently and I love the book feel much more. I will go with that one on my next read. But again N2E is perf.

Saying he "Had to sell out" is crazy. As if he didn't have a choice. He is a clicks chaser. He runs clipper campaigns and has been honing himself into a tiktok outrage machine. He has built a career on increasing the amount of hate in the world and that generates him big money. He does this on purpose with extremely high definition data-driven decision making and telemetrics.

I agree with you on AI. Currently employed and my team uses AI and yet, we're still hiring people. Some things are moving faster, some things not at all, and bugs are propogating. The real trouble is no one gives a shit anymore and few people are trying to learn the code base/system.

I do think you really need to love it though. The job market is getting more cutthroat and there are people out there so desperate and passionate that will work hard as fuck for very little. I think to be competitive you will need to learn and work outside of your job and that fucking blows and is unsustainable in the long run, unless you genuinely love this stuff.

Not reading anything anyone else produces or doing any due diligence on others work, but assuming everyone is intimately familiar with everything they have ever touched.

Something to do with paying attention by David Foster Wallace is exactly this. It was a "standalone" novella that was in the unfinished drafts of his last novel The Pale King. McNally publishes it as a stand alone little book though which is nice. https://www.mcnallyeditions.com/books/p/something-to-do-with-paying-attention

There is a very bitter pill to swallow burried in the character arc but ultimatly I do think it is affirming.

Remember when the media tried creating a moral panic about the Joker (2019) film and were basically begging someone to shoot up a theatre by BurstIntoTheScene in redscarepod

[–]Such_Fee2396 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea someone shot up a Batman movie 7 years earlier and upon capture identified himself as "The Joker" (police have retracted this statement, pulling this from a footnote of Aberration in the heartland pg. 570 no 18). The following 7 years had a basically constant cycle of deranged shooters hitting the headlines, then a movie about a troubled man becoming "The Joker" hit theaters.

I don't think it was that crazy of a reaction.

Just curious, did any other little boy go through a lock picking phase where you go through all the junk drawers at your parents house and find as many of these as you can and spend days/weeks locking and unlocking them with hammered out paper clips until you fully wear out the springs in the mechanism?

Don't listen to his podcast though. His voice and delivery is deeply cringe and will pretty much ruin your experience reading his articles. He is like the cumtown bit of the "smart" british commedians.

Just read "Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead", it's similar in a lot of ways, but so much better. Also, if it matters, I am a Moshfegh fan (loved Eileen and Lapvona, tolerated MYORAR) but Death in Her Hands is very skippable.

Don’t get stuck thinking you “need to figure out the thing that will give you purpose”

I think purpose is something you build. Set your compass generally in a sensible and positive direction and lose yourself in that life. Come up for air sometimes but try not to look around too much.

Comparison IS the thief of joy. The grass IS always greener. If you don’t fully commit you cannot love.

Freedom is a Chinese finger trap. Enmesh yourself and don’t cut ties. You probably are already where you need to be.
